Another intense start to a trilogy which will blow your socks off. Written with her characteristic style and intelligence, each word acts to paint a picture of a woman brainwashed into compliance, but who has a fire waiting to be ignited. CD Reiss has created a society within a society. One which is secretive, corrupt and misogynistic in the extreme. Dario's plans for revenge centre on Sarah. To degrade, punish, intimidate and rule, another form of oppression and manipulation, all presented in images and well chosen words which leave me breathless. There is no flinching from the situations described and I could not stop reading until that very last word of the gut punch of a cliffhanger. Cannot wait for more. Another treat in store from this gifted writer whose every book I look forward to knowing I will be reading quality.💖💖💖💖💖

I had so high expectations that just fell in pieces .

The description was nice at the back but It feels the plot was not well organised and studied as its not realistic and therefore not convincing .
I could not connect with the story and heroes or their feelings . Every step I was having the thought “wait a moment that is so far from reality it would never happen this way” everybody knows the “do not ever touch family” rule of “Made men” ??? And honour behind this rule . So it kind of straight away gave impression the writer was not so experienced in the world of Cosa Nostra or basic Italian principles . As well the relationship build up even “romantic scenes “ we not captivating and felt like it had to jet get out of the way . Anyway . Someone might actually enjoy it a bit more . Maybe its just me after I read every Cosa Nostra book out there .

Better than I expected

I was prepared to hate this. Forced marriage, innocent girl victim, mob boss etc etc etc. the formula for these books is so overused it’s not funny. But I actually liked this book. The characters were well drawn, world building typical but what can you do? It rocked to its cliffhanger, which is really annoying but again, what can you do, we are at the caprice of the authors of these books. But CD Reiss hooked me, now I want to find out how this ends. By the way, l liked how the characters of the Mafia Wife were introduced.

This book is off to a pretty good start, however, when I got to the end to discover that part 2 (is this another cliff hanging trilogy?) won't be published until December 2022, I lost interest. By the end of next year I'll have read dozens of other books and would have completely lost the plot on this one. I'd have to re-read this one (it's good, but not that good) to catch up. By 2023 when part 3 is released my desire to re-read the past 2 books to finish the last one actually makes me exhausted just considering it.
My suggestion is to wait until all volumes are available before buying this one, then, reading the series may be worth it. As it is, not so much.

Dario Lucari is not a good man

. . . which is precisely what makes this a great read.

Dario is a mad, bad, dangerous Capo seeking vengeance on a deadly, ancient branch of the mafia shrouded in mystery - The Colonia.
The instrument of his vengeance is the sheltered, obedient, virginal daughter of the Dom - Sara Colonia.
His plan - the ancient rite of marriage by capture. Think forced marriage on amphetamines and steroids.

What raises this dark mafia tale head and shoulders above the crowd is Reiss' meticulous, subtle world building. She creates a New York City that is totally new, yet utterly familiar, crafting settings and moods that will leave you breathless. The abandoned roof top green house is *chef's kiss*. It feels as if the terror is hiding in plain sight, and villains and monsters we haven't even conceived of are around every corner. The brilliance of making the reader experience it - and Dario - through Sara's eyes lends a brutal tension to the plot. The interplay between Dario and Sara that is nothing short of emotional alchemy. Dario is callous and savage, flirting with gratuitous violence, but never stepping over the line to monstrous. Gritty and raw, it grabs you by the throat, but there's an undercurrent of tenderness amidst all the steam that sneaks up like a sucker punch!!!
I can't wait to ride out the rest of this redemption arc.
