Biographie de l'auteur

Tomasz Jedrowski is a graduate of Cambridge University and Université de Paris. He was born in Germany to Polish parents, and has lived in several countries, including Poland, and currently lives in Paris, France, where he works in high-fashion. He speaks five languages and writes in English. This is his first novel.

Robert Nairne is an English actor who has appeared in many of the Star Wars blockbuster films – though you might not recognise him because he specialises in bringing creatures and aliens to life, including Susaut Volupicite and Dobarn Tren in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) and Kullbee Sperado and Cycyed Ock in Rouge One: A Star Wars Story (2016). The story line is well described and the characters are credible. The interesting part is the fact that the story takes place beyond the iron curtain, in a country where stigma of homosexualilty is even higher because of its very religious culture.

L'histoire est bien décrite et les personnages sont crédibles. La chose intéressante est le fait que cela a lieu d'hier le rideau de fer, dans un pays où la stigmatisation de l'homosexualité est même plus haute à cause de sa culture très religieuse.

Many of us gay men who came out before the mid naughties wave of gay acceptance remember well the feeling of forbidden love that came along with our sexuality. A time when being spoken to by someone over 30 wasn't the most terrifying thing that could happen to a young gay man, but the ever present threat of ostracisation and violence. A great many of us had loved, or may have even been, that person who buried their feelings for fear of becoming a societal pariah because of the way they were born. This book explores the heartbreak, pain and shame that went along with those times from both sides. An essential ramead for any gay man who remembers the milenium

Superb first novel from this Author...

I remember watching the TV during the Solidarność trade union uprising in 1980, hoping and praying that the Polish people's misery would soon end, justice would be done, and the corrupt Communist leadership of Edward Gierek, and his band of cronies would be disbanded. Poland had already suffered dreadful atrocities during the Second World War, and millions of people, including many, many Jews were killed and forced to leave by the Germans. At the end of the war, the Poles were left to the tender mercies of the Russians...disgracefully, the Western alliance abandoned them and several other countries to their fate.

This story brought everything back. The dark, dangerous times that people lived in, looking over their shoulder to see who was watching them, staying silent in case their words were overheard and repeated to officials who would report them. Who on earth could you trust? It was very atmospheric; the sombre, dispirited mood of the citizens, the hardships endured day after day, and in the middle of it all, Ludwik meets Janusz and begins his swim in the dark...the title is very apt. This story is a BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN CLASSIC, and not at all pretentious...unlike Call Me By Your Name IMHO.

What I find particularly saddening about it all is that despite Poland 'fighting' for their freedom and embracing Western ideals and democracy, they seem to have learned nothing from their past and are now regressing into a country with strict religious morals where LGBT people are no longer an acceptable part of their society, and I've no doubt archaic rules and regulations will come into force sooner rather than later. Luckily, author Tomasz Jedrowski lives in France with his husband.

...And I'm inclined to agree. Some have been comparing it with Pasternak's Zhivago - but here I'm undecided. It hasn't the stature or the sweep of the Pasternak but it penetrates deeper into the psychology of the participants. Pasternak, as I recall, wasn't interested in the sexual preferences of his characters (though I have to admit I read Zhivago probably half a century ago) whereas Swimming in the Dark keeps them centre-stage, which is scarcely surprising given the penalties his characters face for deviation. It is a remarkable novel by all the standards generally applied by penetrative readers, but perhaps not quite Nobel material. I wait to be proved wrong. bm.

This is one of the most convincing stories I have read about first love that stands head and shoulders above most gay novels. It reads like a first novel based on personal experience, if not an autobiography, and there isn’t a false note in the whole book. Moreover, despite the constant danger of being exposed under the repressive Cold War regime in Poland, and their very different expectations, the way the two main protagonists handle their relationship is very believable and remains so when the narrator moves to the USA. This new novel is upbeat and life-affirming and I strongly recommend it.
