We love sparkling water. Can't seem to get enough in our house. And SodaStream is by far the leading company that makes the machines, the bottles, the flavors, and the CO2 cartridges. They are prominently featured in Bed Bath & Beyond and if you didn't look too hard, you'd think they were the only company doing it!
Which, I'm thinking more and more, is what they want. I've tested out a couple of upstart brands attempting to do the same thing, however, with decent results.
What it comes down to, you see, is the CO2. Once you've got the sparkling water making machine, and you've got some bottles, you don't REALLY need the SodaStream-approved flavorings, although again they don't exactly prefer you know that... squeeze a lime into your bottle, for instance.... yummy...
What you DO need is the CO2 refills. If you're not willing to go full-on DIY, which is not for the faint-of-heart, you participate in SS's exchange program. They can re-use the bottles with new CO2 supply and we pay a minimum of $15 each. Other companies have now begun selling CO2 cartridges that fit in SodaStream machines. I've participated in one of those other programs and they're not too bad.
But as evidenced by this new TERRA sparkling water maker from SS, they are NOT pleased... With the Terra machine, you HAVE to use this brand new style CO2 cartridge that nobody else makes. You can't even use the old SS CO2 bottles with this machine.
Did I mention that PepsiCo bought SS out a couple of years ago? No?
As for the actual operation of the Terra machine, the CO2 bottle will install slightly easier than the old ones, and the machine produces perhaps a slightly-more intense stream of bubbles than on previous machines. Perhaps there was an issue with customers not screwing the bottle in firmly enough, or over-tightening it and ruining the CO2 connector, I don't know.
Let it be noted that your old empty SS bottles fit into the dispenser just fine. You insert it in to the mechanism that folds out at a 30 degree angle, like their "Fizzi" machine, seat it up into the machine and lock it into place flush against the machine.
I always appreciate SS providing a bottle and a CO2 cartridge along with a new machine. But until we find out if the exchange program for these pink CO2 bottles is the same price as or better that the old blue CO2 bottles, and if they intend to be as widely distributed, I'd recommend sticking with an older model that uses the threaded-top blue bottles.
