Presumably the author had a nice summer holiday on the Greek Island of Santorini while writing this but there is an unnecessary surfeit of local colour and descriptions of landscapes that don't really mean much to you unless you've been there, rather reminiscent of Thomas Hardy going on about some heath or other for page after page without adding anything to the plot. This does not make up for an almost complete lack of action. In some of Candlish's other books not a lot happens for a few chapters at a time but the characters are strong enough to sustain your interest. In this book they are not. About 20 pages from the end, after ten years of moping, our heroine gets a sudden return of her vertigo (not to mention her sex drive) in an attempt to give us a big finish , or at least provide some sort of resolution but by then the damage has been done. Given the most recent works are so good I will continue to explore Candlish's other earlier works and hope I was just unlucky with this one.
It was an ok read for the price but drags quite a bit in the middle. In many ways it works better as a travel brochure than a novel. Definitely not her best work but unfortunately there was nothing she could do with a plot which physically separates the heroine from the most interesting characters in her life for most of the novel.
