Description du produit
Biographie de l'auteur
Kathleen McGurl lives in Bournemouth with her husband. She has two sons who have both now left home. She always wanted to write, and for many years was waiting until she had the time. Eventually she came to the bitter realisation that no one would pay her for a year off work to write a book, so she sat down and started to write one anyway. Since then she has published several novels with HQ and self-published another. She has also sold dozens of short stories to women's magazines, and written three How To books for writers. After a long career in the IT industry she became a full-time writer in 2019. When she's not writing, she's often out running, slowly.--Ce texte fait référence à une édition épuisée ou non disponible de ce titre.

I live in France and this is a cringeworthy description of France as seen by someone with no real knowledge of the country or the people.

I wanted to race through The Secret of the Chataeu but.......I didn’t want it to end........I wanted it to go on forever but sadly that’s impossible.
The story alternates with one chapter from the past and the following chapter from the present and I honestly can’t decide which I preferred......a great great storyline that has obviously been well researched; In fact I think it would quite possibly make a great film.
Roll on the next Kathleen McGurl book....I can’t wait....x
In the past we are told of the aristocratic owners who have fled from Court during the time of the French Revolution, an enthralling and heartbreaking story.
I was equally gripped by both stories and, as always with the books of this talented author, raced through it far too fast! I look forward to the next one.
I found the description of the region in France and the chateau believable and evocative.
The time slips between the time of the French revolution and present day were clear and easy to follow.
having said that, I do have a few slight criticisms. The chapters concerning the historical timeline were more convincing and the part I enjoyed most. It was finding out the fate of the historical characters that kept me hooked.
The present day characters were just a little dull and predictable. I was able to guess what was coming next with each of them, and crucially, I had the entire ghost part and ending worked out early on. Hence only 4 stars.
Initially, as someone half the age of the protagonist, I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy this book or if it would be on my wave-length. However, the way the author has written this, the characters are likeable and timeless. Other reviews say negatively that it’s a story of 5 friends in which not much happens but I think that the beauty of this book lies in the steady, progressive and believable timeline for the characters, all of whom were developed and had depth: I felt like I was along for the ride with close friends.
The dual-time part of this story was intriguing and informative- there were likeable and unlikeable characters, whom were believable and 3 dimensional. The tension running through this part of the book was subtle but slowly building (especially as you know the outcome of the Revolution!) and believable, especially by those who are history lovers and want to imagine themselves back in times past.
I will certainly be reading other novels by this author. I felt I got totally lost in this book!
