I was very disappointed in this book ,having read similar.not at all what I had hoped for ie some short and complete cases with out personal appions.

Very disappointed. They synopsis of hilarious, terrifying and how the law was broken was not there. The bitterness and contempt of the barrister for the the law and all who are involved shone through. Forget the CPS (who appear to be judge and jury long before any case gets to court). Forget the solicitors, clerks, legal clerks, magistrates, judges….they are beyond the pale according to this secret barrister and are irrelevant as are the laws of the land. In fact, according to him/her only barristers should be in charge and only him/her should write the laws. What a sad state of affairs. To think I looked forward to reading this book.

Very disappointed as I was really looking to reading this book. I’ve picked it up four times desperately convincing myself to keep at it and this time I just can’t bring myself to keep reading. It doesn’t seem to flow at all. For example on a random page “Their desperation was palable, as if they were being chased by a swarm of flying deathmonkeys, salvation from which lay just beyond the threshold.” It’s just hard to read as it constantly jumps topics and I found it it is also quite boring. I found my mind constantly wandered even though I have a genuine interest in this area. Such a shame.

An incredibly overrated and dull book

This is the first book that I've put down and given up on without completion for about 5 years.

It is exceptionally dull. A large section of the start of the book is dedicated to explaining the mind-numbing intricacies of the how the legal apparatus in the UK works. I'm sure the reader needs some background on this, but do we need it at this depth? This ties into what other reviews have stated - that the author seems somewhat confused about what this book is. Is it a first year law undergraduate primer? Or is it a general release book, aimed at the keen reader?

The writing style makes the text difficult to follow - anyone that has ever had a written communication from a legal professional such as when purchasing a home, will likely remember the semi coded language that the communication was written in. The entire volume of text reads like this. It makes the read never really flow, instead keeping the reader in a low gear whilst their brains decode the arrangement of legalese.

I was holding out for the anecdotes in this book - but these are heavily modified "what ifs". I feel like this book was an attempt at emulating "This is going to hurt", but for the legal profession. It simply does not. It is nowhere near as interesting, and is nowhere near as well written.

To conclude, the author is trying to use this text to portray the disorganised, chaotic and underfunded nature of the UK legal system through a series of anecdotes. Whilst this is an important situation to inform the reader about, the author stutters in their role as informer.

Far too complicated for me!

I bought this book having bought similar (not on same subject matter though) where the professionals give you an insider view into their job/life. It does do that. But it doesn’t explain any of the terminology. And unless you’re from that background, it’s so frequently used that it becomes hard work to read. I offered it to two friends of mine and they both didn’t finish it either. It’s a shame but seems it’s not just me who wasn’t able to get on with it. But books are very personal things so the next person to buy it may love it. It just wasn’t for me.

Dull - a missed opportunity

The book seeks to address important issues in relation to the way the law is administered in the UK. After all any of us could interact with the law if circumstances were right or wrong. However the book itself is DULL DULL DULL. The author uses lots of words where two or three might suffice. Other reviews have indicated a need for tighter editing. The overall effect is of a sledgehammer reinforcing points which could have been made more elegantly. Unlike some reviewers I made it to the end in the hope of finding the promised hilarity but apart from the odd smile I clearly missed what others have seen. The author describing a nut-cracker might well well describe "a machine fashioned for cracking nuts" - both describe the same but one is more elegant. This is a missed opportunity. The message here gets buried under too much detail. One matter I found particularly unhelpful was the author's use of "more of this later". Cross referencing would have helped. Straight to the charity shop I am afraid.

I was thinking this is going to be a book where you go to when you are accused of a crime that is not really a crime just some one's suspicion or feelings. But instead it is a book telling the reader how wonderful barristers really are!

I bought this because I'd read the junior doctor tales and loved that one...this was everything that wasn't, a legal tome with very little to lighten the load. I gave up...maybe I should have presisted but it just didn't interest me.

I purchased this with much anticipation though I soon wondered why I'd bothered.
I ploughed my way through the first eighty odd pages and then gave up.
If you have a really serious interest in the law then it would be fine but I found it boring and the decision to read no further was an easy one.

Some very interesting stories and cases.
Informative on the legal system. But poorly structured and far too long and repetitive. I read often and rarely dont finish a book but this was was just not inspiring enough to persevere
