Well, well, well... this was the brother I was waiting to find out more about. Nero Gallo... just the name conjures up images of delectable danger. We’ve learned from the previous books that he’s the most hot-headed, wild and calculating yet impulsive member of the infamous Gallo family. If there’s a hint of trouble, it’s usually Nero that’s the one responsible. It’s only because he’s clever, resourceful and has the right people looking the wrong way, that he’s still walking the streets.
Just like his prized classic cars that fixes up and races, he’s sleek, fast and sex on wheels. The most delicious gangster on Chicago’s streets and his reputation with ladies is just as slick and quick. He’s not a love ‘em and leave ‘em guy because love doesn’t factor into his world... he takes what he physically wants and discards the emotion.
Nero Gallo is the lover that refuses to love, until he becomes reacquainted with a girl from his past; the only girl that has stirred his interest beyond carnal desire. As much as he tries to deny his attraction to her, there’s something about the grease monkey mechanic that fires him up in more ways than he thought imaginable.
In terms of upbringing, Camille and Nero are worlds apart. Nero has always been wealthy. His families business thriving and growing both legitimately and illegally. Camille on the other hand has had it tough but you get the impression that she wouldn’t change a thing about the upbringing she’s had, only to not have her father working so hard for so little return. Living hand to mouth is hard but rewarding.
They both work tirelessly to maintain their bespoke garage business, but as her dads health falls into decline Camille takes on more and more. So when her 17year old half brother, Vic starts running with the wrong crowd she knows she is the one who needs to step in.
Tracking him down to a frat party he’s far too young to be invited to, she is thrown back amongst old school friends she’d sooner never have seen again. Immediately all the old taunts and teasing ensues. Sure she’s poor and looks like she’s just stepped out of a greasy mechanics pit... but at least knows hard work and integrity. Not like Bella Page and her spoiled Queen Bees! Uuurrgghhh vile creatures.
The only person to leap to her defence is the one person she never thought would even notice her. Nero Gallo. The only thing they have in common is their love of cars and mechanics.. but she knows his reputation. She knows he’s dangerous... a gangster and criminal by all accounts, but he’s that most enticing mix of beautiful and lethal that makes him ultimately alluring.
Finding Vic and dragging out of the party, Camille looks to make her way home, but as they leave she is stopped by Officer Schultz, local Chicago Police. When her brother is searched, it becomes clear the mess he got himself into is more dangerous and costly than she initially thought. He’s a drug mule. Selling MDMA for a local dealer. But he’s her little brother, she can’t let him waste his life rotting in jail, so she takes the blame.
Expecting to be arrested she is shocked when the cop lets her go, but Camille knows it won’t end there; there’s more to come. Sure enough she’s coerced into striking a deal and becoming an informant; forced to infiltrate the dealers. She now has to occupy a place in a world she doesn’t know or understand.
The more she gets involved, the more she encounters Nero. Although not necessarily seeking each other out, the pull towards each other is obvious. The attraction magnetic. I don’t want to give any more of the story away, but let’s just say... when they finally give in to their desire for each other, they are firing on all cylinders.
There’s lots to this plot... drug deals, murdered cops, paternity tests, bank robberies... so much I couldn’t possibly go into it all, but one thing that keeps you reading is the building love between Nero and Camille. They empower each other: giving each other what neither thought possible or deserving of. It’s so powerful that they just draw you in.
I love Nero by the end of this story so much. He’s wickedly naughty, but everyone loves the loveable rogue. The rough diamond!
Excellent story... can’t wait to keep reading this series to find out what happens to them. Well done Sophie Lark... another belter!!
Camille Rivera has always been the outcast. She was never the girly one. Her family worked for everything they have and worked hard. She’s a mechanic at her father’s garage and she knows her way around a car engine. She’s protective of her little brother and her father. She has dreams, but they are so far packed away that she doesn’t even know what they are anymore. When she finds herself in a bad situation after trying to rescue her little brother from himself and his friends, she only has one person she can turn to and she hates to ask for help.
Nero and Camille are perfect for each other. Neither one of them live the norm of society. Nero is the rich boy that takes what he wants with no thought to the consequences or very little thought to them, and Camille lives by the rules of society, but she is a female mechanic that can even show Nero a thing or two about cars and he takes pride in his collection and the work he does on his own cars. The danger these two find themselves in leads to an attraction neither one of them saw coming. However, once they figure it out, they are loyal to each other and will do whatever it takes to protect the other. I love Sophie Lark’s books and Nero was everything I had hoped for and more. I give this story a 5-star review and look forward to more of the Brutal Birthright Books.
Sebastian is still my favourite but I do like Nero, his love of cars, how protective he is.
The characters are likeable, Camille and Nero are well matched. It flowed well and I could not put it down.
I would highly recommend. And although it is part of a series it can still be read as a standalone.
Nero is everything your parents warn you about, everything they tell you to stay away from.
Hes a perfect statue to look at but underneath he's cold, emotionless & dangerous until Camille happened.
Can't really blame her, the adrenaline rush he creates would bring anyone alive with passion.
