Fans of Fantasy and Paranormal will love it. Why?
Because we have:
-a stubborn and strong willed heroine. Selfless and very gifted;
-all fantasy creatures (vampires, werewolves, fae, trolls ...) some I didn't know existed;
-hot overbearing males (yum!);
-great second characters. All her friends are interesting;
-well developped character you can truly connect with;
-mystery and action;
-and much more.
I couldn't put it down and can't wait for book 2 (always my problem with the first published book of a good serie :-(). An other author I'll follfow with great interest.

Why is it so good? Well, it isn't that original. There are a lot of familiar elements, reminiscent of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, and the author didn't do anything massively different with the vampire/werewolf myths. However, what the author did is she wrote these familiar elements so well that it didn't matter how many times I had read something similar. The opening chapter excels in making the main character sympathetic and likeable and from there the story and characters compel you. Some have said the main character, Sara, is a Mary Sue. This is true in the sense that many of the male characters around her seem to fancy her, but she is far from perfect, and there was even an explanation for their attraction at the end of the book.
There was a point quite early in the book when the vampires first show up where it feels a tad generic and predictable, but with the introduction of new monsters it soon gets past that. What follows is a story full of human emotion, relatable conflict, friendship and family drama, all balanced nicely with rapid fire action and peril and some thrilling fantasy elements. The writing style is so good and the characters so well written that it is a truly absorbing read.
I suppose whether or not you like the main character is relative, and sure this wont be for everybody. But if you like flawed, vulnerable heroines who learn slowly to stand up for what they believe and embrace their strengths, and urban fantasy balanced with human drama, then you wont be disappointed.
Add to that the huge lack of contractions - I thought the author was giving the characters an ‘older’ way of speaking, but nope, they all talk in the same stilted way.
Overall, though, I enjoyed the plot and how all the characters wove together. The book particularly redeems itself in the last quarter, with Sara’s contriteness and explanations as to why she is as she is. This may even be enough to spur me on to book 2, although I don’t know if I can cope with a second saga of Sara being way more super special than, well, everyone else.
Our main character is Sara. Sara is seventeen years old, she lives with her uncle and heals animals, imps and other magical beings called ‘The People’. Sara’s dad was murdered when she was seven and she has spent her whole life trying to find his killer and why he was murdered. Sara has a magical gift that she has kept secret from her family and friends and when she comes to the attention of a vampire her whole life spins out of control.
Sara was an interesting character, I can’t decide if I like her or not. She is very immature, constantly makes stupid decisions and seems to be totally unaware of the feelings she provokes in others. She is kind, compassionate and loyal and will run to help others and animals but she isn’t very self-aware. She is sassy, argumentative and annoying but she cares. A real mixed bag.
The storyline was full on. I was really concerned when we started to meet every mythical creature I could think of. This book is a real mashup of cultures and worlds and Sara seems to belong in them all. Even though we meet a whole load of characters with a whole load of special powers, I didn’t have any trouble keeping up with them all. The storyline does border on the extreme but it’s magic, so what would you expect really?
There was no romance or sexy time in this book but it is totally hinted at, so I will assume that it happens in the next in the series. I probably will continue with the series, especially as my friend says that it gets better, but I’ll wait until the next one is reduced in price as it didn’t get me keen enough to start it right away.
The plot was very different to what I’ve read before but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will be reading the next book in the series.
