Volume 5 of the Punisher Epics covers material from 1990 and 1991, so not quite the height of Punisher madness (he only had a relatively restrained two solo series rather than three), but certainly still part of what could be considered his heyday.
Whether by design or accident, this volume sees Frank in particularly travel-happy mood, taking his war on crime around the world. Together with a number of new gadgets including a flying van (!) provided by his regular assistant Microchip, it helps to give the book a slightly more James Bond-like feel than the usual New York street-based stories. There's even an element of the supernatural in the six-part Jigsaw storyline, although hilariously the Epic includes the writer's apology to the readers about the inclusion of such esoteric fare.
Together with the regular issues and an annual, there are also two specials/graphic novels, No Escape and The Prize; the first brings a couple of other supercharacters into Frank's orbit, and the second is another country-hopping intrigue tale. It's all fine - the writing and art are both suitably hardboiled and gritty throughout - but reading so many issues in one big chunk like this, it becomes clear that the Punisher is by definition quite a repetitive character. He finds out about a dastardly criminal, chases them down, and shoots them; even changes to presentation and setting do little to disguise that.
Because of that, this volume is probably better for dipping into now and then when you want a little sleaze, rather than reading straight through. Extras include some original Mark Texeira art and a Marvel Age preview of a cancelled book.
