For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in happily ever after. Until she learns that the love of her life is about to marry another, and her dreams are shattered.
Desperate to stop the wedding, and heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic, but wicked, Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.
But after Evangeline's first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game - and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy . . .

This book was a love at first EVERYTHING for me - sight, word, page, tear, smile... After having loved the Caraval trilogy, I was more than eager to dive back into Stephanie's amazing and magical world. I enjoyed every second and word of this story. Evangeline is very relatable. She is smart, but her broken heart pushes her to make bad decisions and any of us would have done the same in her case. But apart from that, she's really brave. I loved following her story and it was an absolute delight to see Jacks again. The plot was gripping from the very beginning. I really liked how the different parts of the story worked together and how the magic was present all through the book. The plot was perfectly nailed down, full of twists and turns, tension, betrayals, love and magic. I am in awe of Stephanie's writing every time and this book did not disappoint. There's just something with the words she chooses that makes everything more fantastical and beautifully whimsical. It pulls me in and I couldn't be happier about it. I really loved the mystery that unraveled and the ending had be gasping and panting in expectation. I simply cannot wait for the sequel!
I would definitely recommend this masterpiece to anyone who loves magic and fairytales.
"Heroes don't get happy endings. They give them to other people."
Evangeline a 17 ans.
My only problem with this book is I have to wait 8 whole months to be able to read the sequel… This fairytale is simply amazing. It can make your heart full, tear it in pieces, and then mend it back together, that’s how good this magical world is. I somehow grew attached to all characters (except that witch, you know who and why…), and I couldn’t help but feel for our Prince of Hearts (who rightfully deserves that title by the way).
I was so much into this story I read it in one sitting last night, I only realized it was 3am when I closed the book after finishing it.

The world is so beautifully illustrated, full of whimsical imagery and magical scenery akin to the Caraval trilogy. Even though it’s not necessary to read Caraval I’d highly encourage that you do. While this is a separate story to the original trilogy, there is a lot of context, especially at the beginning that is briefly mentioned but not explained in detail - as it is featured in the trilogy. As someone who has read the original trilogy, I loved reading all of the mentions of what happened before this book and I feel like it would be a shame to miss it, and be spoiled for it if you haven’t read it yet.
As for the characters, the Prince of Hearts has to be my favourite. Jacks is such an interesting character and I was delighted to see Garber delve deeper into his personality and motives in this book. I love morally grey characters, and Jacks is a perfect reflection of that. His choices are not always orthodox but that is exactly what makes him such a compelling and exciting character. I cannot wait to the sequel to see where the story takes him next. 5/5 stars!

Unlike the Caraval series, I really enjoyed both the characters and the storyline of this book. I found the story continued to flow throughout the book and I was always eager for what was around the corner, I also feel like more of the characters in this book had promise, they were more interesting and I actually enjoyed reading their parts and wanted more of them.
I don’t think there were many things I disliked about this book, I’m really not a fan of the love triangle, I find that to be overused so much these days that it just annoys me now. There isn’t necessarily a love triangle in this book but I felt in my heart there was and in the next book, I hope the couple I like either get closer or that any possibility is just knocked on the head before I get too invested in them.
I don’t think you need to read the Caraval series to read this book, but it does give you a good insight into what has happened to Jacks just before you first read of him in Once Upon A Broken Heart.
I have absolutely no problem giving this book 5 stars. From a couple of chapters in I just knew this was going to be one of my favourite books. I would completely recommend this book to anyone who loves to read Fantasy Romance. It’s such a good book.

That's all i can say!
Thank you so much to @HODDERBOOKS and @netgalley for the chance to read this book in advance of its release. I had preordered this title long before I saw it on NetGalley and was intrigued.
Once upon a broken heart is filled with twists and turns that I never saw coming and that not sure I'll recover from anytime soon! My first foray into the world created by @stephanie_garber was an incredibly successful one and I have a feeling that she has just jumped her way into the category of one of my favourite authors. Her writing style is witty and beautifully descriptive, pulling together the image in your head with ease. The ending has floored me and I legitimately face palmed when I realised it was the end, I wasn't ready for it! I need more Jacks in my life! 🍏

There's a lack of worldbuilding and it reads like 'and this happened, and then this happened.' Another example: 'I'd always hoped Nocte Neverending was real,' Evangaline said. 'But I was never sure.'
'Well it is, and we want you to go.' It's the sort of dialogue you get in children's books. To be honest, I gave up as it was boring me to tears - something a book about magic and romance shouldn't really do.
