The Secret Barrister is a junior barrister specialising in criminal law, and the author of the award-winning blog of the same name. The Secret Barrister writes for many publications, including The Times, the Guardian, New Statesman, iNews, Esquire and Counsel magazine.

In 2016 and 2017, the Secret Barrister was named Independent Blogger of the Year at the Editorial Intelligence Comment Awards. In 2018, the Secret Barrister was named Legal Personality of the Year at the Law Society Awards.

Their first book, The Secret Barrister: Stories of the Law and How It’s Broken, was a Sunday Times number-one bestseller and has been in the top-ten bestseller list for more than a year. It won the Books Are My Bag Non-Fiction Award 2018, and was shortlisted for Waterstones Book of the Year and the Specsavers Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2018.

'Nothing But the Truth' charts the Secret Barrister's first decade at the Bar, describing experiences that gradually turn him/her from a penal hard-liner into a much more enlightened, if profoundly cynical, liberal. The book is to a large extent autobiographical and is much more lively, self-critical and entertaining than most of the large number of inconsequential autobiographies published by barristers and judges in recent years. Although the argument is somewhat fragmented at times by innumerable sub-headings and abrupt changes of subject, the writing throughout is passionate, often angry, and there are many hilarious stories about particular cases in which SB has acted.

SB is commendably modest and self-effacing, and 'Nothing But the Truth' is certainly a compelling read. It contains many remarkable, and shocking, insights into the operation - indeed the collapse - of the criminal justice system in this country.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

As a law student (over ten years ago now 😭) who was fortunate enough to study on the Bar course, I have read all of the Secret Barristers books. Not only because it gives a good insight into the life of a barrister I chose not to progress with, but it provides critical insight into the laws that work and need some improvement.

For each of their previous work, I have given a solid 5 out of 5; however, this one fell a little short. The reasons for this are a little unclear; however, it may be because I was familiar with the path to be taken and so knew the ending.

That said, a very enjoyable read that I demolished within two days and glad I pre-ordered.

I felt like a ghost on the shoulder of newly graduated law student, as they navigated every possible obstacle to become a barrister, and though their first ten years of practice. On the journey, we get to see the veil of hope and optimism lifted from their eyes. They expose the legend that UK has 'the best justice system in the world' is now just a myth. The autobiographical anecdotes are self-effacing and humorous and draw you along what might otherwise be a dry subject, and put the lie to the image of the 'fat cat lawyer' so often portrayed in the tabloid press tabloid .
