My first encounter with V.E. Schwab's work was her Shades of Magic series, and I immediately fell in love. So when I heard that her out-of-print debut was around the corner, I didn't hesitate to hit that pre-order button. I knew I was in for a treat and I was not disappointed!

As the blurb says, this story is part fairy tale and part love story. The narrative centers around a young woman who lives in a small town, trapped by the expectations of the men around her, but aching to follow in her late father's footsteps. She's wise beyond her years, and living in that special point of adolescence/young adulthood where she hovers between relating to children and wanting to be an adult, taken seriously by her seniors. Add to that that the men in her life are dismissive of her ideas on the basis of her needing to stay in her place as a girl, and that makes for a great heroine with a righteous rebellious streak. Lexi doesn't care what rules she has to break if it means saving the people she cares about.

The world of this book is one I didn't want to leave. Its mythos, while simple, was so well-developed and immersive that it felt like it could be real. My favorite kind of fantasy is the kind that feels like it could be happening in real life, and fairy tales that manage to spin magic with a touch of realism are my kryptonite. It made me wish the story was longer, if only so I could spend more time in that world.

I think my favorite part of the story, however, was how the character that should have been the prince in shining armor was more of a damsel in distress. Lexi was very much in command, and though she had many forces acting against her, she never really needed saving, or felt helpless, and was fully capable of kicking ass and doing what needed doing. Cole, on the other hand, while valiant and brave, played more of the role of the person that needed saving. This story had the familiarity of a fairy tale, but has a unique spin to it I wasn't expecting.

All in all, if you're a fan of fairy tales (think Holly Black's work), then this should definitely be your next read!

Another Victoria Schwab novel down and another novel I just am okay with. The actual novel itself was really good but never got to a point where it wowed me. The little short story the Ash-Born Boy I could have done without.

I think my biggest problem with Schwab is that I love her ideas and concepts but I don't necessarily enjoy how those ideas are executed. That has been the case for all of her works so far for me. I either enjoy them enough or not at all. Not that I could write the ideas any better because I can't but that is just how I feel. I am still drawn to her novels because of that very reason.

The Near Witch was short and sweet and that is what made it enjoyable had it gone on any longer then I definitely think the story would have overstayed it's welcome.

Beware of Reading Funk 🤯

Goodness gracious! This author never fails to put me in reading funk after reading her novel(s). The Near Witch evolves on a stranger who is supposedly just passing by but got caught in the mysterious disappearance of children. The timeline is not stated, but it is definitely in the old days since the mindset of the characters is antiquated. I picture the setting of this novel in Cornwall, England like the movie Stardust (one side magical and one side non-supernatural). But what really has caught my focus is the Ash-boy. I wish the publishing company of this book will commission Victoria to expand Cole’s story along with Lexi. I mean the author can go on a route of exposing Cole’s biological father and mix the complication with the Councils and Witch Covenant. There are so many possibilities to twist the story. I can see the potential of it being a best selling book on the shelves. What do you say Titan Books?

It was part love story, part mystery, and part old ghost story. You feel the sense of urgency on Lexi's part because she has a younger sister named Wren and she fears for her safety. She also falls in love with the mysterious boy/witch, Cole (she named him) that has come to town. She wants to clear his name and the only way she can do that is to use her gift (tracking) that she inherited from her father. You learn that her father passed away and the tragic circumstances behind that as the story unfolds. She is missing him terribly and the only way she feels close to him is trying to track down who or what is taking these children.

I really tried to get into this one, but I just really never could. Hopefully other readers will find something in it that I didn't.

The setting was the highlight for me. Taking place in a small village on a moor, I was fascinated by the moor itself. There is a pair of elderly sisters I found to be the most intriguing and endearing. There are some supernatural elements. I really couldn't decide on a time frame for the story other than it feels like quite some time in the past.

Not for me or just poorly written? I'm a consumer of all sorts of ghost stories, fantasy books, and the like. While I understand that the author wrote it when she was younger and less experienced, this book reads like a child wrote it. Poor editing. Amateurish. I'm struggling to finish it out of principle.

I am a sucker for VE Schwab books but truly loved this one. It was fast paced, well written, a little haunting, sweet, and of course magical. I read this book pretty quickly and then gave it to my 10-year-old daughter who also loved this book and read it within 4 days.

If you like magic, a little romance, a little danger, and well written books, this is the one for you.

This is the first book of Victoria Schwab's that I have read, and I can already tell that she is going to become one of my favorite book authors. I love so many things about this story. The powerful imagery of the town of Near, the character development, the not so hidden meanings, and overall just the exquisite attention to detail. I highly recommend this book to all fantasy book lovers, and I am looking forward to reading more!

This book was good enough. Entertaining all the way through as I wasn't board at any point in reading it. I liked the setting in the moors and in the woods, this created a creepy feeling in the setting that I appreciated. A lot of the characters fell flat for me and the romance wasn't super compelling.

I always love Victoria Schwabs writing style. I believe this was her first book and part of it feels slightly less polished than her more recent works. An avid reader will be able to read this in less than a day. That being said I adore stories that have an old fairytale vibe to them and this one has so many classic fairytale elements; stolen children, witches,and a bit of romance. I enjoyed reading it, and I liked the way she wove the theme of 'Fear' into the story. I felt like it had a good message. It would be a great book for older children or teens.
