The circumstances which lead to "Mamma" abducting Emily (her history with her own child) were extreme (and horrifying to read) and for me just stretched the bounds of credulity too far.
Too many questions left unanswered. It was possible (for me) to speed read through a lot and still know what was happening. Never a good sign. I would say don't buy it. Get a copy from the library.
I enjoyed the book and found myself wanting to read more. The characters seemed well formed and interesting.
What didn’t hit the spot was such an abrupt ending. I wanted more about what happened next. The character of Anna became a bit too dull and repetitive.
I was left with a few questions such as; when is her real birthday, is she older or younger than she thinks? Anna was so scared of physical affection yet nothing is really said about the last embrace of the book. What happened to Mamma? What happened to the lilies?
I would recommend reading it. It is well written. Just a few bits missing for it to hit the 5 stars.
The unsatisfactory last quarter spoils the novel 4 stars up to them and 2 stars subsequently
Rosie is living in Florida with her very religious mother. She has a very harsh existence, her mother tries to keep her away from the world in general. Her only real friend is William, the pastor's son. She feels uncomfortable with most people. She knows the story of the child abducted from the nearby theme park, and her mother never takes her there. One day she and William
take an illicit trip there, and she realises she has been there before, she has flashbacks of another lady, and of being led away from the park by her mother. She is determined to find out what happened. Several things happen to panic her, and make her determined to find the truth.
Both girls find out what happened at around the same time, and for both of them it is very traumatic. And neither of them will be able to go back to how it was before, even if it is what everyone else wants.
A very thought-provoking story, well written and well thought out.
Having said all that, the Anna side of the story was I thought brilliantly portrayed with a wonderful dystopian Anne of Green Gables dynamic. It was vivid, believably tense and well structured.
Someone else here mentioned Lizzy Barber's lovely writing style
She does write beautufully and I would definitely read another of her books for this reason despite some weak plot elements in this one.
