4,0 sur 5 étoiles A lovely read about ordinary people

During a heavy snowstorm in New York City, reclusive Professor, Richard Bowmaster, crosses paths with Evelyn Ortega, an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala. Unexpected circumstances lead Richard to seek help from his neighbour, Lucia and the three embark on a journey that shapes their present and awakens ghosts from the past.

In The Midst of Winter was my first Isabel Allende book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Allende is a wonderful story teller and her style of writing really draws you in. Lucia was a wonderful character full of heart and humour which was a nice contrast to serious Richard. It is also a fascinating insight into South America, particularly Chile, Brazil and Guatemala. My knowledge of each country was limited but Allende has ignited my interest and I hope to read more about them. A lovely read about ordinary people.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles A big disappointment

There are three Key People in this book:
Richard Bowmaster is an NYU professor in his mid-sixties who lives in Brooklyn. He’s lonely, avoids physical contact, and does not drink because he’s an alcoholic. Richard is a widower and has a widower father named Joseph who was a Jew in Germany but managed to get out of the country in time.
Lucia Maraz is an NYU teacher who is Richard’s tenant. She lives below him, is in her early sixties, and has occasional sex fantasies about Richard. She once touched him accidentally but he didn’t like it. She is originally from Chile and there is a chapter that deals with the September 11, 1973 overthrow of Salvador Allende’s government. (The author is well qualified to write about this because she lived in Santiago during this time and her father was a first cousin to Salvador Allende.)
Evelyn Ortega is an undocumented immigrant from Guatemala. She’s a young woman who could probably be the daughter of Richard and Lucia if they had produced a child. Richard rear ends her car in an accident and gets Lucia to help translate their conversation. After I read about Evelyn I thought the plot might move toward Richard & Lucia getting together and pseudo-adopting Evelyn as their proxy daughter. Wrong.
We learn all of this about the three characters in the first seventy pages. Then the plot begins with a stunning event. Now we’re getting somewhere, I thought.
Whoops, wrong again. We eventually get to page 245 and three more chapters on the characters’ background follow. At this point I almost tossed the book. But I was getting close to the end so I decided to stick with it and find out what happens. Unfortunately, it ended with a whimper instead of a bang.
Overall I thought this novel was seriously unbalanced with much more character background than plot substance. I’ve read a number of Allende’s earlier books and was disappointed with this one.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles A beautifully written tale of tragedy and redemption

In Brooklyn during the worst snowstorm in living memory, Lucia Maras, her boss at NY University, Richard Bowmaster, and Evelyn, a young undocumented migrant from Guatemala, are thrown together by the discovery of a crime, setting off a chain of events that will alter all of their lives. The premise the plot is based on is on the improbable side, but the way Allende writes and the warmth and insight with which she portrays her characters, all of whom have suffered tragedy, outweighed any reservations I might have had about that. I found the historical background interesting and the account of Evelyn’s journey from Guatemala very moving. There were numerous lovely passages of writing that I wanted to linger on.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles A beautifully written and hopeful novel
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 28 février 2019

I thought this was a really beautiful novel. The characters felt well rounded and the three leads developed in satisfying ways as the book unfolds. In some ways this novel almost felt like a fable or fairy tale as three people are thrown together in a snow storm and two go to extreme lengths to help the third. I think the extreme weather, which cuts the characters off from the rest of the world, gave the novel this slightly magical feeling. Allende writes beautifully, this is only the second of her books I've read, but I'll definitely be reading more of them. She writes about the brutal events in the pasts of the two female leads, Evelyn and Lucia (in Chile and Guatemala respectively), in a way that feels truthful and real, without being exploitative of the pain of real people who may have gone through very similar experiences. I didn't find the sections dealing with Richard's past as engaging, as he had a more selfish past, but these sections were still interesting. This story had an incredibly hopeful feel to it, and a much happier ending than I was expecting, considering much of the pain and hardship all three characters experienced, which was very lovely. I purchased this as an audio book, as well as a kindle edition, and read some parts, and listened to others. The audio book was read very well.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Both Lucia and Richard are good characters, and they fall in love without pomp ...

Both Lucia and Richard are good characters, and they fall in love without pomp and circumstance, a genuine love story with two characters who are past middle aged and beyond the point where society would see them as people capable of being passionate.

Allende teaches the history of Latinos (from both Chile and Guatemala) and the challenges they face in a world so different from our own. It is so easy to think that illegal aliens should not be in the country, but looked at what they have gone through in their own countries and we see a different picture. The terror that exists forces them to try something new. I gained a whole new understanding about these people fleeing for their lives.

Evelyn is naïve but the fear of being discovered without papers drives her to ask for help from Richard and Lucia.

This book was our January Book Club selection for a group of women in their retirement years.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Three interesting stories and a terrible plot!!!

I enjoyed reading the separate stories of the three characters the perfect story teller Ms Allende is, but it was a torture reading these three individuals interact to make the book!!! As if the author was pressed for time when it came to connecting these three people one way or another!!! But luckily this novel didn’t stop me from following Ms Allende’s latest which are great and back on the track.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Amusing light hearted little tale
Commenté au Royaume-Uni 🇬🇧 le 12 janvier 2019

What I have called this is perhaps not what Isabel Allende would want to see there but that said even though the blurb to this book makes it sound more like a thriller than an amusing tale I think if you read it with a view to the light hearted it becomes an easy to read enthralling novel. Her characterisation is up to her usual standard and their back stories, in the current climate re immigrants in the US make this a relevant and interesting read. You have to see the funny side of the situation and exploits the main characters end up in as a balance to the horrors of their past lives.
