A lo largo de la historia de la filosofía numerosos pensadores han defendido la idea de que existe una “naturaleza humana”, es decir, algo que define a ese ente que conocemos como “ser humano”, a la especie homo sapiens.

Pero desde el siglo XIX, especialmente con la teoría de la evolución de Darwin y el desarrollo de la antropología cultural, el concepto de “naturaleza humana” comenzó a ser cuestionado. “No hay una naturaleza humana fija; son muchos los factores que condicionan y modifican la acción humana”, se ha afirmado.

En este escenario, y ante el desprestigio de la metafísica en la filosofía moderna, ¿puede afirmarse que hay “una” naturaleza humana? Y si el ser humano no tiene naturaleza, entonces ¿qué es? ¿A qué nos referimos cuando hablamos del “hombre”, del homo sapiens? 

En este libro el autor defiende la existencia de una naturaleza humana universal y responde a las objeciones que se han planteado a este concepto desde posiciones como el existencialismo, el evolucionismo, el historicismo y el conductismo. 

Asimismo, expone las características que definen al ser humano y, por lo tanto, son universales y rebasan los condicionamientos históricos, culturales o sociales —para lo cual retoma el pensamiento del filósofo alemán Erich Fromm—.

Concluye presentando diversas respuestas patológicas que pueden darse a las necesidades existenciales humanas y que confirman, por la vía negativa, la existencia una naturaleza humana universal. 

“Dios ha muerto”, afirmó el filósofo alemán Friedrich Nietzsche hacia finales del siglo XIX. Con el desarrollo de la filosofía moderna, a partir del siglo XVII, el lugar que había ocupado Dios en la vida del ser humano fue arrebatado por la razón, que se convirtió en la fuerza suprema y creadora, capaz de comprenderlo todo y de conducir a la humanidad a la felicidad y a la prosperidad, gracias a los avances científicos y tecnológicos.

Religión y fe en la crisis de la modernidad expone el proceso de secularización que se dio con la llegada de la filosofía moderna y las trágicas consecuencias que produjo la instauración de la razón instrumental.

El objetivo del autor es proponer un retorno a la dimensión religiosa presente en el ser humano y recuperar la experiencia de fe en Dios —siguiendo el programa del cristianismo— como una alternativa para crear una sociedad verdaderamente humana, en el que, como añoraba el filósofo Max Horkheimer, “lo injusto no sea la última palabra”.
