Marcus, handsome and seemingly enigmatic, presents a very attractive prospect for young Lily, who soon finds herself moving into Marcus's flat and into the bedroom of the recently departed Sinead - who, Lily learns, was Marcus's lover. Intrigued by the beautiful Sinead, by Marcus's relationship with her and with what really happened to her, Lily rapidly becomes obsessed with her predecessor - especially when Marcus soon becomes Lily's lover. But is Sinead dead - as Marcus infers - or is she still very much alive? And if she is alive, why is she haunting Lily?

With (very faint) tones of Daphne du Maurier's classic 'Rebecca' - in fact Alfred Hitchcock's movie version of 'Rebecca' is actually watched by Marcus and Lily during the course of the novel - Maggie O'Farrell's 'My Lover's Lover' is a tale which initially held me gripped by the storyline and by Lily's obsession with the elusive Sinead. I was also very interested in what had really happened between Marcus and Sinead and why their relationship - which, at first glance, appeared to be a solid one - came to such an unfortunate ending. However, as the novel progressed, I found myself wanting the author to get on with her story and really delve into Marcus's psyche and why he behaved the way he did - but I cannot explain further without revealing spoilers. So, on the whole, intriguing up to a point and I certainly wanted to discover what really happened between Marcus and Sinead, but not a story that I feel will stay in my mind for very long - hence the three stars and not the four stars I initially thought I'd award it when I first started the book.

I surprise myself by writing this about a Maggie O'Farrell book, but I did not enjoy this book at all. As always, O'Farrell shows her expertise in description, but the actual story was lacking. When Lilly moves in with her architect boyfriend, Marcus, she becomes obsessed in finding out what happened to his previous girlfriend, Sinead. Marcus is tight lipped about the ending of the relationship and Lilly cannot let it go. I cared nothing for the characters of Marcus, Aiden, Lilly or Sinead. There was no hook to the plot to make me want to read more. A great disappointment.

'After you'd gone' was such a great intro to Maggie O'Farrell. This was a huge let down. A conventional romance that tries to hide behind overblown prose and where the characters are universally unlikeable. At times the writing was so laboured, it read like a parody. I'm told her other books are so much better. This was woeful.

I have just read 'the hand that first held mine' - which was brilliant. so i was looking fwd to reading My lovers lover. It is written in the same suspenseful style and snippets of information. However it irritated me from the beginning.I thought the lingering of Sinead was good - I have a good imagination and I am easily spooked. I bought into the story and thought heart break was described vey well. But the ending left me flat and it felt convenient.

so not impressed - - but I would read another of books - just not maybe for a little while.

I enjoyed the interaction of the characters and the slow build up of their personalities.

I was a little puzzled by the "appearance" of Sinead when Lily moved into the flat

On the whole I enjoyed the book and you were certainly kept guessing the outcome.
