Since discovering her books a few years ago, Isabelle Allende has become one of my go to writers and although I won’t be counting it as a favourite, Of Love and Shadows is a compelling read about life under a military dictatorship in an unnamed South American country (undoubtedly Chile).

As always, Allende writes with a fluidity that draws you in and compels you to keep turning the pages no matter what the content and there are numerous parts I found very difficult to read. This is complemented by the strong sense of place Allende creates. I was left with a very real impression of what it was like to live under a military dictatorship. The oppression and the fear are palpable. It’s an intense read but I did feel the intensity dropped a little in the middle part of the book and my interest dipped, never quite recovering. The ending was also very understated and initially I wasn’t sure I liked it but on reflection I appreciate its simplicity and the fact that this was the reality. Overall, it’s another solid novel from Allende and I would recommend it.

What a fabulous author. Beautifully written with so much emotion - will make you cry and laugh. She takes you to South America through some very tough times. I have loaned out this book and people are saying 'best book ever read".
