Estoy aprendiendo español por mí cuenta con vídeos, libros... Soy francesa y aún asi he pudido disfrutar el libro ,intentando leer eĺ significado de las palabras en inglese. My english is a bit rubbish !
Ojalá Juan escriba otros libros B2, C1...

Voici le troisième livre que je viens d'acheter de Juan Fernandez.
Il est de niveau B2, donc un peu plus difficile. L'histoire est bien.
Il y a de nombreux dialogues écrits en Anglais, puis traduits entre parenthèses en Espagnol, ce qui, je trouve,
alourdit un peu le texte. Même si je comprends pourquoi il a procédé de cette manière, j'aurai préféré voir un peu moins d'anglais quand même.
A la deuxième lecture (oui, j'en fais toujours deux pour prendre des notes !), on peut passer plus facilement les textes en anglais si on le souhaite, et aller directement à ce qui nous intéresse.
C'est du travail, c'est sûr, mais on est là pour ça non?

Les livres de Juan Fernandez permettent d'améliorer son niveau de grammaire et de vocabulaire espagnol en lisant des histoires divertissantes. C'est agréable à lire et on a vraiment envie de connaitre le dénouement. A la fin de chaque chapitre, une liste de mots est traduite en anglais et en anglais seulement. Je conseille également sa chaîne Youtube "Español con Juan" ou on apprend beaucoup et jamais on ne s'ennuie.

L'histoire est profondément déprimante ... mais l'on s'attache au personnage principal.
Juan n'est pas le meilleur auteur de la terre et il se perd parfois (il ne semble pas y avoir vraiment de plan), mais le but ici est de nous apprendre l'espagnol et il le fait si bien! Gracias Señor!

Lo que me gusta en el : los protagonistas parecen muy realistas. Tambien la historia de sus vidas. no son muy simpaticos, eso no, exepto la heroina que poco a poco se hace interesante y entranable. Podria usted escribir mas libros para este nivel ?

This was just right for me at the moment: stretching but not too hard. The chapter length was good for reading one or two chapters each evening before my brain conked out por demasiado español. Vocabulary lists after each chapter were helpful, and also at the right level for me; and I like how words that are in the vocabulary sections are in bold in the chapter. Being immersed in reading something longer and more coherent than Duolingo lessons did something strange but useful to my head: I found that while I was doing physical work like gardening, my head would start to swirl with nonsense Spanish and then, after a while, with more meaningful Spanish.

As a story I wish it had got moving slightly faster. At first I started to feel awfully depressed with Loli's life of beaten-down self-loathing and thought it took maybe 15% of the book too long before she started to really change something. After that, though, it was a pleasure to read as the story developed. Passed the "stay up too late reading" test, and also the "root for main character" test. And the evocations of Loli's brother's gross belching made me laugh, while at the same time I was still hoping we'd get words like "your mess, your problem" or maybe "rat poison".

One niggle which might be a software problem (Kindle edition) is that throughout the book, apostrophes in anything written in English are almost all wrong. They are either missing, or have been replaced by accented s or t characters. This is irritating and slightly reduced my faith that the Spanish was accurate. Oh, and also a note about English cursing - the format is different from Spanish! It's "puta camisa" in Spanish, but it's f***_ing_ shirt in English. Again, just a little niggle; and thank you for some vocabulary that I don't think Duolingo teaches.

Overall I enjoyed this a lot, and if you write more B2 books I'll probably read them. Thank you.

His darkest and most complex story yet

This is the latest of several graduated Spanish readers by Juan Fernandez that I have read. It’s certainly the most complex in terms of grammar and vocabulary, although the plot is fairly straightforward. Loli lives in London, she is nineteen and apparently suffering from low self-esteem. She binges on crisps and cola having left school with no prospects and having failed to hold down low-paid jobs as a baby sitter and checkout girl. Although her parents are Spanish, she was hopeless at Spanish at school and was ridiculed by her classmates for being fat and stupid. She lives with her parents, her younger brother and her mother’s father, and to earn her keep she works as the family drudge, cooking, cleaning and doing the laundry. Her grandfather has withdrawn into himself and never leaves his room, which saddens her because when she was younger, she had a close relationship with him. Then she discovers an old photograph of a young woman and surmises that this is her grandfather’s former sweetheart. She also discovers a cache of letters he wrote to the woman but never sent. As they are all written in Spanish, Loli sets herself the task of finally getting to grips with the language so that she can translate the letters into English. She also plans to go to the village in Andalusia where the young woman lived and try to find her.
What follows is both surprising and disturbing and this is the best story by Juan Fernandez that I have read so far. There is a lot of complexity in terms of colloquialisms and extensive use of the conditional and subjunctive, but as usual the author gives a helpful glossary at the end of each chapter. The chapters are also arranged to facilitate bit-sized reading, with some chapters only two pages long and others four or five pages. Whereas the author was the central character-narrator in Fantasmas del Pasado, in this story he makes a cameo appearance as a university professor who grew up near the village where the old photograph was taken. Loli also meets a young Spanish woman in a bookshop who helps her to learn the language and to solve the mystery of the photograph.
I would recommend this book to anyone who can read Spanish at an intermediate level and believes they are getting close to being able to read some “real” Spanish literature. It was a challenge for me, but ultimately more than worth the effort.

I'm not sure my exact level: somewhere between B1 and B2. Lots of different sources are saying that the secret to progressing from here (apart from living in Spain!) is to read books at a level slightly beyond your ability.

What I enjoyed most is being introduced to Spanish expressions that you simply could not guess how to construct them, and this book repeated these many times, which hopefully begins to build familiarity.

And the story was interesting, although I didn't really understand the end!! I'll buy more of this author's books, ¡sin duda!

To be honest, the story is not that great, but that’s really not what I was here for. I want to improve my Spanish, to build my vocabulary and to become more familiar with grammar patterns - and for that, this book is just about perfect. And the story was still good enough to keep me interested. I love the way the chapters are bite-sized with a short vocabulary review after each one. I’ve seen other graded readers with a full glossary at the end of the book, and that’s not too convenient for me. To see the words and phrases explained right after the chapter, in chronological order, is really helpful. There’s lots of useful idiomatic language, and the level - B2 - was just right for me. I could read it fairly comfortably, while still picking up a fair bit of new language, noticing more and more uses of the subjunctive, etc. - so as far as comprehensible input goes, it’s right on the money. It seems there’s a lot of material out there for beginner to low intermediate level, but it’s not always easy to find books at B2 or C1 level presenting language in such an accessible form. It really helps to build your confidence and scaffolds the way towards higher level reading. Muchas gracias, Juan. More like this, please!

¡Me gustan los libros y podcasts de Juan Fernández!
This story is easy to read, a bit sad especially towards the end but has some lighthearted moments and I smiled when the author introduced a character based on himself and advertised his other books, very clever Juan ;-)
I would also add that, as a teacher of languages myself, I would be pleasantly surprised by a girl like Loli using a dictionary rather than ‘google translate’ to translate her grandad’s letters! It is optimistic and I hope it inspires people to keep up their languages!
At the end of the book I also learned about Serrat and his famous song Penelope, that was interesting how it fitted with part of the story ! Clever and witty!
Finalmente, por favor, ¡sigue escribiendo historias en español Juan!
