5,0 sur 5 étoiles A Dog, a Twin, and an Examination of Love... and Laughter!
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 16 décembre 2022

Let's get this straight--the best character in The Last Eligible Billionaire is not Hayes, the antisocial billionaire from the title, or Begonia, the free-spirited woman who teaches him to love. It's Marshmallow, her rescue dog who failed service dog training because he knew all the commands but wouldn't do them when told. Instead, he makes mischief by chewing up a priceless sculpture, relocating an ornamental tree, knocking his head into his "mommy's" chest when she appears to choke, and finally committing treachery of such magnitude that he almost fell off my list of favorites and was surpassed by Begonia's twin sister Hyacinth, a very pregnant and outspoken woman whose four-year-old parrots her profanity and who looks just like Begonia but with brown hair, not fuchsia.

The plot in a nutshell: Hayes Rutherford, having attended his brother's wedding and become the last eligible billionaire in the country, retreats to his Maine island retreat, expecting to relax alone before going back to work at his family's Razzle Dazzle Films, maker of popular but formulaic rom-coms. Instead, he finds Begonia in his bathroom, singing off-key and waxing her bikini area in what she thought was a rental but was actually a revenge tactic by the property manager's ex-girlfriend. His younger brother alerts him that his mother is coming with a "nice young lady" for him. To prevent his mother from pushing a "suitable" candidate at him, Hayes begs Begonia to sign a two-week agreement to pose as his girlfriend, ensuring that the tabloids photograph them together and letting him off the hook for six months (being seen with another woman during that time frame would label him a playboy, which would damage his family's reputation and threaten their business). Begonia, newly divorced and craving an adventure where no ex-husband can tell her not to do what she thinks would be fun, signs and begins the ruse when his mother arrives with a woman who "married" him in second grade and is in his social class. Begonia, on the other hand, is a high school art teacher who's been saving for a trip to Paris but is about two years away from achieving that goal. To make up for it, she has a natural ability to love life and the people in it--and she has Marshmallow, who immediately attaches himself to Hayes and obeys only his commands. (Hayes is allergic to dogs, no surprise.) The fake lovers are photographed by paparazzi, and Hayes is as satisfied as Begonia is disappointed; she thought Hayes was warming to her and not just using her for his own ends. There's a series of dates and times spent together in Hayes's retreat house crashed by Oysterberry Islanders, including a surprisingly talented violin trio and the mayor, who used to date Hayes and misses him. When they're caught in a comprising position behind the catering truck at a gala and outed as a pretend couple, Begonia decides she loves him but has to leave because he's too scared to say it back. He was betrayed by many girls in high school who wanted his gifts, rides in his family's car, access to his cute younger brother (a heartthrob actor in many Razzle Dazzle films) and not himself, and by the woman he loved in college, who cheated on him and married his worst enemy. Those betrayals changed him from a boy raised on Razzle Dazzle films who believed in happy endings to a cynic who was afraid to open his heart and risk getting hurt. Begonia leaves, and they're both miserable. But Mr. and Mrs. Rutherford visit Hayes and Begonia separately and convince them to try again. Mrs. Rutherford says that Begonia gave her back her sweet son, who only didn't say he loved her too because it was too much like a line from a Razzle Dazzle film. Mr. Rutherford tells Hayes that if he's not comfortable facing the public as CFO of Razzle Dazzle, he has the family's permission to step away. The summer camp where the twins spent their childhood summers had been sold to new owners who let the campground deteriorate and built a mansion on the former site of the dining hall, but Hyacinth tells Begonia that it's been sold again and the new owner wants to turn it back into a camp. Guess who bought it--Hayes! He proposes to Begonia at the end of summer, and they get their happy ending!

Love: Razzle Dazzle has been producing boy-meets-girl movies for decades, and Mr. Rutherford decides that the audience is ready for something new, so he green-lights a film about a gay couple. One of Hayes's cousins--his favorite cousin--is a lesbian married to a woman and keeps asking Begonia to do coffee and explain to her the appeal of men. And in the hetero arena, Begonia reveals to Hayes's mother that he does things he wouldn't have to do with a fake girlfriend, like joining her for breakfast and putting up with Marshmallow, to whom he's allergic. Bottom line, he thinks of her and acts on those thoughts, and that kind of attention spells "love" more than the words themselves.

I recommend this book!

Jeeves Reads Romance

There was something missing for me, but this has all of the ingredients of a GREAT book - Grant's signature quirky humor, an unexpected pairing, a fake relationship scheme that quickly gets out of control, and a coldhearted billionaire who finally meets his match. I wanted to love it so hard, and I did enjoy it quite a bit. I loved the outlandishness and the comedy aspect, and I'm always a sucker for a fake relationship romance. The opposites attract dynamic also worked, and it's easy to get caught up in the story. For me, I was distracted at the start by the many characters - while this says it's a total standalone, I kept trying to remember if I'd heard names before in past Grant romances - and then somewhere along the way the emotional connection started to feel a little lacking. I still enjoyed this (I'm a huge fan of Grant's work for a reason), it was just easier to put down than others I've read.

The story follows Begonia and Hayes, two strangers who meet in the most memorable of ways. Begonia is on a post-divorce vacation and minding her own business in her rental property when Hayes enters and claims that he's the owner of the building... and he didn't rent it out. After their initial encounter spirals out of control, Hayes finds himself blackmailing Begonia to be his fake girlfriend. As the last eligible billionaire, everyone is obsessed with Hayes' love life - and he's been burned too many times before to want something real. Claiming that this hot mess of a woman is his girlfriend is sure to get his family to stop meddling, but things don't go as planned. As the two spend time together, Hayes and Begonia strike up a friendship that feels like more. Whether it's friends with benefits or something real is yet to be determined.

I've never been a fan of friends with benefits, so that's where this started to go off course for me. At one point, Begonia literally says (in reference to a potential hookup between them), “You don’t have to kiss me, you don’t have to look at me, we don’t have to have the lights on, and we can keep touching to a minimum," and I think my love of the book sort of curled up and died in that moment, lol. Not completely, but it definitely put a damper on things for me. Everything else about the book is 5-star-worthy, but the lackluster emotional connection and Begonia's self-esteem issues kept me from loving the book. We see a lot of resistance from both characters to fall for real, even if it was happening against their will. I did love Hayes though; it was great to see this unfeeling guy fall for someone so bold and vibrant. Opposites definitely attract in this case, and they balance each other out perfectly. Overall, not one of my favorites from the author, but still a very solid rom com.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Grumpy/Sunshine, Romance, Funny & More!

Grumpy/Sunshine, he’s a billionaire who owns a famously well known company, she’s a high school art teacher with an adorable dog who failed at being a service dog, some misunderstandings, two people found themselves in an unlikely situation made the best of it, sounds like a story worth reading right? Because it sure did to me.

Hayes Alexander Rutherford found himself as the last eligible billionaire and with his family, mostly his mother trying to set him up with highly well known bachelorettes, all Hayes wanted was peace and quiet from being around people. You could imagine that when he arrived at his island beach house in Maine, he was shocked and throughly annoyed to not only find his house in a complete mess, but to see that a woman had apparently been living in his home for the past two days?! Now for Begonia, she had envisioned a getaway after finalizing her divorce and pampering herself in a luxurious home, which she got a surprisingly good deal on… until Hayes came home and found her in his bathroom…. In an awkward situation that involved her being semi nude. Through some misunderstanding, Begonia suddenly found herself in a sticky situation and Hayes was growing more irritated with how talkative Begonia was and her dog, Marshmallow, who Hayes was allergic to. Through the back and forth of arguing and trying to settle the situation, and Marshmallow accidentally calling Hayes mother… Hayes suddenly got the bright idea to salvage the horrible mess that he and Begonia were in.

From beginning to end, this book didn’t hold back on the humor and jokes. Begonia’s inner monologue/ thoughts were funny and even Hayes trying to quell his lust over Begonia was hilarious as well. If you’re looking for a book that not only has romance and fake dating, and are in the mood to laugh, this book is the one. I mean I’ve read books that had comedy in it, but the way Pippa Grant wrote this book had me laughing out loud and omg it just made the reading experience more enjoyable and literally brought smiles to my face.

For Begonia, she was all about learning to rediscover herself following her divorce and just enjoying life as she sought fit. Begonia was a person filled with life and joy and didn’t conform to people’s expectations which I loved about her. In a way, Begonia was also unapologetic about who she was and what she wanted. In a way, I could emphasize with Begonia in that she was taking charge of how she wanted to live her life, and not revert back to the way things were when she was married to Chad ( her ex-husband). I also loved how despite the rocky start Begonia and Hayes had in the very beginning, Hayes never tried to change Begonia, he was accepting and actually liked the way she was. Not to mention, I loved the way Hayes stood up for Begonia. Begonia deserved the best and despite the fake dating ruse, she was starting to see that Hayes was fitting into the standards she had always wanted in a man.

The romance between Begonia and Hayes was sweet, funny, passionate, and oh so enjoyable! Like any grumpy male lead, slowly but surely Hayes started to see Begonia’s personality as amazing and found her comfortable to be around, and for the first time in a long time, he felt like he could be himself around her. I also loved how Hayes was genuinely happy being around Begonia, as well as I found it endearing the way he got a little shy when admitting how he felt about Begonia such as, when they had their late night picnic outdoors. That scene was both romantic and spicy! YAY! Basically I was thriving and living for all the romance and Hayes being a billionaire doing anything to make Begonia happy like buying/ making her an art room filled with equipment in his mega mansion like it was nothing and spoiling her, my girl Begonia was being treated like the Queen that she was.

The character growth for both Hayes and Begonia was good, but I would say that Hayes had more to learn especially when it came to learning to trust others and love. Hayes was a grumpy man, who always assumed people only wanted to be around him for his money, connections or even to get close to his brother. So you can imagine that when Begonia came into the picture and was offering to help Hayes with things such as, interviewing assistants for him, he assumed it was for something in return, and yet with Begonia she was a selfless person who just liked to help others. Begonia helped bring back a lighthearted energy to Hayes that opened him up and see that Begonia genuinely loved Hayes for the man that he was.

Overall a fantastic, fun story to read. I was laughing from the hilarious situation that Begonia and Hayes found themselves in, not to mention how Marshmallow would somehow cause messes that ended up being laughable as well. The romance was sweet and passionate, and I loved the chemistry between Begonia and Hayes. Grumpy/Sunshine tropes never gets old for me and of course a billionaire romance is always fun to see especially when men such as, Hayes use their money to spoil their lovely lady. The character growth for Hayes was great, and the overall pace was good too. I absolutely loved the epilogue and bonus epilogue that brought a true happy ending to Begonia and Haye’s romance. I swooned, blushed, laughed, and found this book to be amazing.

I loved this one. Only thing I didn’t like was the dog. Not cause I dislike dogs but the stuff the dog was doing was just so far fetched. At least to me it was. But as far as Hayes & Begonia going I freaking love them! So glad they found each other. Ugh Begonias mother & ex…. So glad those jerks were left in the dust! Can’t wait to read the next Pippa Grant Book.

A grumpy/sunshine, fake relationship, enemies to lovers, contemporary, rom com.

Begonia is a recent divorcee who goes on an adventure to rediscover herself. She should have probably known the island rental she booked was too good to be true. Hayes is the older son of a prominent, wealthy family that is held to high, unrealistic standards. He escapes his brother's wedding to decompress, seeking solitude and privacy at his property on an island off the coast of Maine. Only when he gets there, the house is a mess and there is a nearly naked woman in his bathroom. It takes a while for him to convince Begonia who he is and that it is his home. In an abstract way reminds me of the story of Goldilocks. Begonia and Hayes are opposites in nearly every way, but as they spend time together, they grow on each other. Why did Begonia divorce her husband? Who pesters Begonia to return to her ex? What events cause Hayes to be the 'last eligible billionaire'? Why is Hayes considered to be odd? Who is Hyacinth? A delightful story of an independent, open, loving woman searching to regain true her true self and in the process unknowingly breaks down the barriers of a grumpy, disillusioned, introverted man. The rescued, obedience school drop out, dog, Marshmallow, adds just the right amount of silliness and is a character onto himself without uttering a word.

We love a good grumpy sunshine trope but I love even more when there's a pet involved AND we get to see families come together in a most unexpected way. Status quo gives way to some pretty terrible and downright diabolical forms of sabotage when an outsider approaches, much like sharks to blood in the water, but Hayes' family redemption arc makes me all warm and fuzzy. Marshmallow is by far the star of the show - ladies, if he isn't willing to take allergy meds to embrace your perfect service animal school flunk outfit baby, you don't want him trust me.

I absolutely adore Begonia and Hayes. I've read a lot of romance novels, and I've enjoyed a lot of them, but this one got me right in the heart. Begonia is super funny and sweet, and Hayes has been so hurt in the past. They're truly ment to be together, and I was rooting for them the entire time. This book is the perfect mix of humor and hurt/comfort.
