Il n’y a pas longtemps, dans une chapelle de Las Vegas, j’ai juré à Karissa de l’aimer pour le restant de mes jours. Mais personne n’a jamais promis des lendemains infinis. Personne n’a promis l’éternité. Parfois, la seule chose dont on dispose, c’est l’instant présent.

Les fins de contes de fées se payent très cher, mais un homme digne de ce nom doit être prêt à en payer le prix. Seulement, je ne compte pas me laisser faire et accepter toutes les conséquences.

Quand la femme que j’aime est concernée ? Quand la vie pour laquelle je me suis battu est menacée ?

Personne n’est à l’abri.

Ne le dis pas si tu ne le penses pas...

C’est un concept simple, que j’ai répété à de nombreuses reprises, mais les gens ne semblent pas le comprendre. Il faut choisir chaque syllabe avec précaution, parce qu’on ne sait jamais quand quelqu’un risque de vous prendre au mot.

Quelqu’un comme moi.

Je ne suis pas un homme bon. Pas du tout. Je le sais. J’ai assez de ténèbres en moi pour débarrasser le monde de chaque rayon de lumière. Pourtant, il y en a un auquel je ne ferais jamais de mal, une lumière que je ne pourrais me résoudre à éteindre.

Elle me prend pour un monstre, et elle a peut-être raison. Je l’attise par mes caresses, je prends mon pied en torturant son âme. Mais je ne suis pas le seul. Le monde grouille de monstres et je ne suis pas le plus dangereux d’entre eux.

Loin de là...

Que Dieu me vienne en aide, parce que je l’aime.

Ignazio Vitale n’est pas un homme bon.

Je le soupçonne dès notre première rencontre, je sens le danger qui entoure cet homme. Il a une façon d’exiger l’attention, de prendre le contrôle, de savoir ce que je pense avant même que je le sache.

C’est à la fois inquiétant et attirant. C’est sombre et redoutable. C’est tout ce que j’ai toujours voulu, et pourtant la dernière chose dont j’ai besoin. Une obsession.

Il ne lui faut pas longtemps pour m’attirer dans sa toile, me charmer jusque dans son lit et me prendre au piège de sa vie, une vie dont j’ignore tout avant qu’il soit trop tard. Il a des secrets, des secrets que je ne peux percer et qui m’empêchent de partir, même si je le supplie de me laisser m’en aller. Je l’aperçois parfois dans ses yeux, cette noirceur terrifiante et fascinante à la fois. C’est un monstre dans un emballage somptueux, et ce que je découvre en le démasquant change absolument tout.

J’ai envie de le haïr.

Parfois même, j’y parviens.

Et pourtant, ça ne m’empêche pas de l’aimer.
