Slow paced and slow burn story about two enemies, one captive of the other. They make their way across the land, and our heroine gets to learn more about the world outside the palace walls.

I enjoyed the banter. But I will say I struggled with getting any sense of purpose or meaning behind the characters' goals and values. The world building was really slim, and the characters could have been fleshed out a bit more. In the end, things felt rushed and too simplistic.

I'll be reading the second book to see what this leads to.

What a great read! This story has strong characters and is beautifully descriptive. I certainly didn't expect some of the plot twists, especially at the end. I wanted to keep reading, as I always do with Linda's books, and I can't wait for the next novel to see how this all plays out for Lark. I found this story a bit darker than the Dragon Archives series which makes it stand apart. I'm really looking forward to the next book. We'll done, Linda!

Excited, yet Disappointed & Grieved!

This is an intriguing and gripping tale with one catch...it's a cliffhangar. I absolutely hate being suckered in by an author or their publishing house, and not getting a full story in one book. What a ripoff! All of Ms. Hopkins other books are full, complete stories and not broken up to get additional money out of the reader. It's an insult to those of us who have followed this author, and bought all of her other books (whether Kindle, through Audible or both). I do not recommend this book, if you hate cliffhangars as much as I do, or publisher manipulation, or can't wait a year, until the next installment.
Update (May15, 2022): I reread the book. I wrote my initial post in anger. I still feel the same way. I took two stars off because of the ending alone. I would do it again. The author is an excellent writer & the story is thrilling with great plot twists, but the cliffhangar blows the read. It's deadly.
