From the author of the UK number one best seller They Both Die at the End.
Balancing epic and intensely personal stakes, the New York Times best-selling Infinity Son is a gritty, fast-paced adventure about two brothers caught up in a magical war generations in the making.
Growing up in New York, brothers Emil and Brighton always idolised the Spell Walkers—a vigilante group sworn to rid the world of specters. While the Spell Walkers and other celestials are born with powers, specters take them, violently stealing the essence of endangered magical creatures.
Brighton wishes he had a power so he could join the fray. Emil just wants the fighting to stop. The cycle of violence has taken a toll, making it harder for anyone with a power to live peacefully and openly. In this climate of fear, a gang of specters has been growing bolder by the day.
Then, in a brawl after a protest, Emil manifests a power of his own—one that puts him right at the heart of the conflict and sets him up to be the heroic Spell Walker Brighton always wanted to be.
Brotherhood, love and loyalty will be put to the test, and no one will escape the fight unscathed.

I had heard very mixed things about this book so I went in with low expectations but I was completely blown away!
I love anything to do with super heroes and I'm a sucker for Silvera's books in general.
He is extremely skilled at making his characters relatable, even if they have super powers. He also manages to flawlessly merge modern day New York with the history of Celestials and Specters (spelling it this way upsets me as a Brit haha).
I have a special fondness for Adam's soft characters and so I was a total sucker for Emil and I could definitely relate to a lot of his inner turmoil.
This books also drops bombshells like nothing I've ever experienced. Every time had me shocked but it was always something even more exciting.
It's a very fast paced book and the chapters flow very easily (another common trait of Silvera's books) and this one was so action packed I feel like I was running around New York with the gang myself!
The ending didn't surprise me as such but I'm extremely excited to read the sequel (Infinity Reaper) to find out the consequences of people's actions.
However, as much as I loved Emil and Ness, I did sometimes struggle with Brighton and Maribelle. I empathised with them both hugely but I'm not sure if I actually *like* them as characters. But I'm happy to see more of them and for my mind to be changed!
I also loved the Phoenixes in this book, and more books should include them!

- Every second word in the book is Instagram.
- Every thing that happens in the book is followed by a video upload on YouTube 😥
- We have a secret weapon but let's disclose everything on YouTube because I need followers.
- OMG, my best friend died so let's honor him on Instagram, even though I want revenge.
- The protagonist monologues for 80% of the book.
- You see the ending twist coming from miles away.
- No coherent explanation for the magic system, the creatures and the different types of magical beings.
- Zero explanations for Phoenix life cycles, types, origin, how humans find Phoenix eggs.
- Where did the Wands come from?
- Blegh!
Only character who had a coherent storyline was Ness but for barely 10% of book time. Everyone else was downright annoying 🙁

The things Adam Silvera does great are here: amazing LGBTQ representation, great blending of supernatural with technology and social media.
But i just didn’t feel the heart here.
Will I read the second? Yes. It was a nice twist there on the last page, and in the second book, I’ll know the world more.
Should you read it? Yes. Because phoenixes are gorgeous and it’s obvious Adam put his heart and soul into this.
I’m just... empty.
