Tessa Bailey is back with a Schitt’s Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood “It Girl” who’s cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town... where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn’t belong.
As seen on E!Online, PopSugar, CNN, EliteDaily, Vulture, Buzzfeed, Bustle, the Nerd Daily, PARADE, LA Magazine, Country Living, USA Today, and more!
Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father’s dive bar... in Washington.
Piper hasn’t even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won’t last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can’t do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She’s determined to show her stepfather—and the hot, grumpy local—that she’s more than a pretty face.
Except it’s a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there’s an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn’t want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan—and this town full of memories—may have already caught her heart.

Revue de presse
"I put my entire life on hold the moment I opened IT HAPPENED ONE SUMMER. I read it in one long, luxurious sitting, reading each page twice, not wanting to miss a moment, and dreading The End. I knew I was reading one of my new favorite books, and I will reread it for years to come, whenever I need a dose of small-town coziness and hard-bodied sea captains. Tessa disarms you with a laugh, heats things up past boiling, and then puts a squeeze inside your heart. The tenderness, vulnerability and heat I am always guaranteed with a Tessa Bailey book are the reasons she is one of my all-time favorite authors." -- Sally Thorne
"Tessa Bailey writes pure magic! It Happened One Summer has everything you could want in a rom-com—heartwarming romance, laugh-out-loud humor, and scorching hot chemistry between the lovable socialite and sexy ship captain. I absolutely loved it!" -- Alexis Daria, bestselling author of You Had Me at Hola
"With her singular talent for writing romantic chemistry that is both sparkling sweet and explosively sexy, Tessa Bailey once again delivers—It Happened One Summer is everything I want in a modern romance, with two complicated, appealing leads, a setting that feels lived-in and also fresh, and storytelling you want to sink into even as you can’t stop turning pages. The total package from one of the genre’s very best." -- Kate Clayborn, author of Love at First
"Fans of 'Schitt’s Creek' will love the premise of Bailey’s latest work... [a] sexy, drama-filled love story. 'It Happened One Summer' is another great beach read. Plus, laying out in the sun is a perfect excuse for the blush-inducing scenes scattered throughout." -- USA Today
"Schitt's Creek fans, this is the romance read for you." -- PopSugar (Best Books of July)
"Her voice feels as fresh and contemporary as a Netflix rom-com... Bailey writes banter and rom-com scenarios with aplomb, but for those who like their romance on the spicier side, she’s also the Michelangelo of dirty talk. She wields filth like Da Vinci does a paintbrush, and there’s a lot to be said for an author who can fill such exchanges with all the requisite heat, enthusiastic consent, and yes, even humor, of such a scenario without veering into corny territory." -- Entertainment Weekly
"Bailey strikes rom-com gold in this outstanding tale... [She] is bound to earn new followers with love scenes hot enough to boil water and a hilariously naïve Schitt’s Creek-inspired protagonist who is clearly out of her depth." -- Booklist (starred review)
"Bailey delivers on her usual trifecta of sharp banter, instant chemistry, and high-heat sex scenes, but they are coupled with intense soul-searching for both Piper and Brendan... Another winning romance from an author at the top of her game." -- Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
“When you read a book by Bailey, there are two things you can always count on: sexy, rapid-fire dialogue and scorching love scenes...” -- BookPage.com --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition paperback.

Honestly it kinda pains me to rate this lower. I was really loving this book. I was smiling so much. It was sweet and sexy and adorable and had its funny & charming moments. It's the first time in a long time my kindle battery died because I was glued to it too much to go upstairs to put it on charge.
This book was absolutely gonna be a 5 star read for me and that made me excited then it started to dwindle. Look, first of all what soured it for me early on and then returned later on was something that is possibly spoilery so... [ Brendan is a widow but the way he talks of his deceased wife is such an easy out. "We didn't love each other. I didn't have intense feelings like I do for you." Like why can't it be both? He wears a wedding ring for someone long after they are gone, and yet he is so dismissive about her. It's a cheap tactic in my opinion.] It probably won't bother many other people but it bothers me when this is done. The other thing that just ruined it for me is that Tessa Bailey really fell back on some weird norms of masculinity and femininity, I think this is showcased in what is perceived as man = grunty, big and possessive and woman = small, dainty and reliant on him. There was "a real man!" comment or two. But that's a whole other conversation, but the gendering didn't stop. There was masculine back muscles there were "he's so male/ smells so male." There was a "feminine message" and yes I spelled that right. A feminine chair. Etc etc
Then there were lines like:
“It was like a movie poster, with the male lead curling his big, hunky body over the swooning, feminine lady and taking his fill.”
“folds of her femininity,”
“Looking at her across the table with rare male vulnerability,”
I'm not trying to mean I'm really not, I really like Tessa Bailey and her writing but this was too much and at some point it starts to feel like a point is being made but what?? And why??
I had to skim from 70% on because the things I mentioned ruined it for me. And I loved Piper and glad she got her HEA. I absolutely loved her relationship with her sister, honestly some of my fave moments. And yes Piper and Brendan are this lovely mismatch together that works so well. In the end though it feels like Piper gave up herself so she can be someone that Brendan gets to protect.
It's a pity because this book had feelings of pure joy, I was genuinely having a great time reading this! I loved Piper because I loved Alexis Rose's character and growth in Schitts creek but I'd go in with a expectation of very loosely based on Alexis because the growth with Alexis is long and this is naturally a little more sped up where Piper is concerned. Also if Alexis ended up with more of a Mutt type than a Ted type. And if you're expecting a more diverse set of characters, this book is very hetero-normative. I do have to say there's extra layers of depth in this book that I wasn't expecting especially with Piper and her family's past, that added extra emotion to the book.
I wanted to love this and was loving it but it fell apart for me which suuuucks.

The plot line in one line: After being arrested, “it girl” Piper is banished to her pokey little birth town where she meets the gorgeous but grumpy young fisherman Brendan who – despite his best efforts not to – develops the hots and a heart for her.
The good and the bad: So, turns out fishermen are hawt. And grumpy. And big-hearted, passionate and very good in bed! Brendan was certainly “catch of the day” in this book.
I wasn’t expecting to like a vacuous, social media star but Tessa Bailey wrote Piper really well – yes the heroine was a bit clueless, but she had a heart of gold and was really just lacking confidence (the real stuff, no the false front she puts on for social media).
The sexual tension between them was zinging! And when they finally get to the good stuff, it’s off-the-Richter-scale hot. Oh, and touch taboo. I loved how Brendan knew exactly what he wanted, and what would make Piper pop, and he delivered every time - as was described in detail.
I liked how there was an initial clash between the two, but then Brendan soon realised how much he liked Piper and went in pursuit of her – seeing through her faux confidence. It was perfect. It didn’t need to be more than that – just them falling in love and becoming better, more fulfilled people as a result.
But then… sigh… the Bailey wrote in the typical, last-minute twist of drama right toward the end and it took the shine off the story because what happens between Brendan and Piper is so out of character for them as a couple and as individuals – it just didn’t make sense. It wasn't necessary - the book was going great as it was. Though it was a bit contrived, it didn’t ruin what was otherwise a really, massively, superbly enjoyable romance.
I am very much looking forward to reading the next book in the series – about Piper’s sister Hannah and Brendan’s skipper, Fox.

The story follows “it” girl influencer Piper on her journey back to her parent’s seaside home town where she meets the rugged sea captain Brendan.
At first I found it really difficult to get on with Piper I actually didn’t like her much at all. She acted spoiled and as if everything and everyone was beneath her i.e. the law?! Eventually though I started to warm to her throughout what became her redemption story and I loved the arc her character took to find who she truly is and what really matters to her
The story is told in a dual POV and I really enjoyed this dynamic between Piper and Brendan. I felt like Brendan almost didn’t know what to do with her but in the end his fast and true nature tamed her. Both characters are polar opposites so if you love the enemies to romance trope you’ll enjoy this!

Of course not. In the first few page, I was dubious, quickly realising this was the point and there was so much to unravel about Piper Bellinger.
When a series of bad decisions sent LA socialite Piper and her dutiful sister to the fishing town of Westpoint, no one was ready for what lay ahead. A burley widowed Captain Brendan fought when a sequinned covered Piper showed up turning his routined world and hometown askew.
Piper’s relationship with her sister was truly endearing and a standout in this book. The sense of home as the Westpoint residents were introduced was surprising but made the book all the warmer.
I cannot ignore the fireworks, steam and chaos that filled the pages with the battle of wills between a starry eyed socialite and a no nonsense captain.
I wish i could articulate the escapism I felt when enveloped in this funny, steamy, heartwarming and empowering book.
The personal developments and progression each character made through this book had me hooked on plot and characterisation.
Great summer read.
