Very helpful and it teaches you new things like meditation and how mindfullness can be very useful in combating the symptoms of the disorder and apart from that, self compassion is a thing that persons with OCD should concentrate more on and the book delivers on that part too.Authors use humour and explain things very well.Glad that I bought it.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Wow. Everything I’ve covered in therapy

I truly, rarely, write reviews. But this book is incredible.

While I’ve had OCD my whole life, it was only after a bad cycle earlier this year that I finally sought therapy and figured out my extreme anxiety and panic attacks that I “couldn’t shake” and would “go over and over in my head” were OCD. After weekly sessions since February I’ve been doing a lot better, but still struggle during the week between sessions.

I actually saw this book recommended on a Reddit OCD forum (I know, Reddit, eyeroll) and decided it would be worth supplementing therapy. wow. I’m about halfway through and these are all the thoughts, ideas and concepts we’ve discussed in therapy.

I can see the bigger picture from the therapists eyes and also am able to passively dive deeper into concepts than I’m able to in therapy.

Im going to keep going with both, but this will be a book I will come back to time and time again. If you struggle with OCD, get help. Also get some medication. Also get this book! As hard as it is for me to admit, my OCD won’t magically go away. I know this now, but I’m hoping to have a tool belt to live more smoothly and be less surprised when it rears it’s ugly head again later in life.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles The ERP guide that I didn't know that I needed

Everyday Mindfulness for OCD by Jon Hershfield and Shala Nicely

This is the book that I needed at the time that I needed it. This book is not a good introduction to convince you that ERP is the way to treat OCD or help define what OCD is and what it looks like, but it shows you how to do ERP and how to try to change your mindset to get the most out of ERP. The IOCDF has a document that I have found very helpful that details how to get the most out of therapy and ERP, but this book is a huge expansion on these exact some topics. The book addresses my objections and questions about ERP, and as an example walks through how meditation is helpful to approach ERP. I’ve heard of mindfulness and meditation as good for OCD, but I’ve never had it explained so explicitly why they are helpful in approaching ERP. Talking about how your meditation process of gently bringing yourself back to your breath is analogous to how you should approach any lapses in ERP. Be gentle and understanding with your lapses as you work on your ERP and treat yourself as you would when you are doing meditation. In meditation a wandering mind is a given and it is accepted that for 100% of meditation sessions you will have to do gently refocus your attention. Treat yourself the same way with ERP.

Despite the title, there is a large focus on self-compassion as well. This is a hugely relevant topic after living with OCD for 32 years before getting treatment with ERP. My self-compassion and self talk is about where one would expect after years of beating myself down. I need the explicit directions on how to talk to myself with understanding and compassion. Properly focusing on self-compassion, meditation and mindfulness is hopefully enough to give me a better chance to succeed with ERP from this point forward than the success that I have had in the past.

This is a book that I am going to carry with me for the coming months and I expect that I will read through it four or five times as I seek to implement the ideas that are presented here.

3,0 sur 5 étoiles Great Book To Have Around For the OCD Sufferer
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 11 mars 2022

I really appreciate that these 2 authors are authority figures on OCD.

They both have had their own personal battles with OCD which can be very comforting. I found some sections particularly vulnerable which made it super relatable. They cover a gamut of OCD types in the book and do not shy away from even the more taboo ones. Bravo.

But the grammar in the writing is just down right infuriating. I find myself having to re-read sentences to gnaw on the presented topics. I would like to extend grace to the authors because I do realize OCD has so many layers to it. And intrusive thoughts/ruminations are often LIKE run-on sentences, but come on. Every few paragraphs while the authors explain a tip they would add (you can refer this to chapter 2) (chapter 4), etc. A more efficient way to go about your references would be just that, a back section for what else? Your references.

I'd really love for the authors to help their readers find solace in their on going battle with OCD by simply dumbing down the concepts and language. As a college grad that reads pretty regularly, I just had a really hard time. So I cannot imagine the challenge for others.

OCD sufferers often times exhibit tendencies in their childhood, adolescence, etc. So wouldn't the authors want to somewhat try to bridge the gap for their audience's sake? If not, who is this book for? Your peers or the Jane/John Does of the wold? More visual illustrations, charts, etc. would be welcomed, breaking up concepts into more simplistic terms.

As a note, it was highlighted in several reviews that the authors fused their humor into this book. But to be frank, I find it more comical that their editors clearly took a backseat. I hope to find their workbook to be a more functional addition to my journey. I will be referring to some exercises and concepts I learned in thearpy.

4,0 sur 5 étoiles Reframing is the key
Commenté en Allemagne 🇩🇪 le 26 mai 2020

There were some takeaways for me from this book, but the part I didn’t like was the setting up of an almost adversarial relationship with OCD.

This is not an enemy. It’s not something to be outsmarted. It’s something that desperately and unconditionally loves you and wants you to be safe at all costs.

The first game changer for me, in my life long relationship with OCD was the science. Learning about the Amygdala, and how mine is set with a hair trigger. That’s essentially what underpins the whole experience. I get into an anxious state very very easily and anxious thinking then produces all sorts of distortions.

The second was reframing my relationship. I used to think of OCD as the enemy, as some internal manifestation that hated me and wanted me to fail. My mission was to get rid of it. Exorcise the demon.

However, what helped immensely was reframing that relationship. If the essence of it was an overprotective Amygdala, well that was kind of sweet, wasn’t it? It just NEEDED to know that I was safe, like some kind of big, shaggy overprotective sheepdog.

Which I now call Amy.

Amy has always been with me and always will be. Getting worked up and excited and trying to let me know when the slightest whiff of danger appears. Like an odd thought. Or sensation. She’s always there, trying to keep me safe from it.

There’s no point talking to her about it in any sort of rational way: she’s a dog. I just give her a big hug and thank her for her concern.

That seems to help. And I also kinda love having her around now.

5,0 sur 5 étoiles Wonderfully written, truly transformative, life-changing
Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 27 décembre 2017

This book is truly amazing and life-changing. It is helping me to experience so much more self-kindness, self-compassion and joy. I couldn't put it down, and finished it within a few hours. I'm now re-reading over and over. It will be truly supportive for the years to come. I have attacked myself so much for having OCD. I have been so unkind, unloving - my own worst enemy. The authors are helping me to completely recontextualize the experience of having OCD.

The authors speak of OCD mastery, which in itself, is an evolutionary concept, and revolutionary in the mind of the OCDer. I have felt like a victim of OCD for so long. Now, learning about OCD mastery kindles new energy, courage, committment and gratitude for the opportunity for mastery. It has been said that our greatest difficulty is our greatest treasure, in disguise. I have trusted that this is true, but I have not yet lived beyond a place where OCD feels like a curse. However, in this book, the authors provide the tools and mindset to transform this challenge of OCD into a journey of bravery, courage, strength, compassion and healing.

From reading this book you will absorb the mindset and approach to make living with OCD a joy, rather than a battle for survival. For me, for a long time, I have been struggling through each day, just surviving. I have used some treatment tools in the past, and have had relative success using them. However, I never got past the point of "just surviving" and I have felt threatened by OCD everyday. I was not flourishing. This book provides the tools to flourish in life with OCD. It spells out the mindset needed to live joyfully with OCD.

It is not an overnight change, but one of gentle mindfulness, committment to the tools provided, an understanding and acceptance of the disorder, and the willingness to choose self-compassion rather than self-attack. I know I have the tools now to love myself and stand up to my OCD. I have a bit more space to breath, and I have a lighter bounce in my step. I'm sure that these two will expand as I continue practicing the tools.

The mindfulness workbook was amazing. Hands down one of the best books on dealing with OCD that I have came across, so when I saw this little book by Jon I jumped to get it. It is 196 pages but about half the size of the mindfulness workbook. Which I personally like because I can pack it in my purses.

I really like the fact that this book reframe so to speak meditation, in that your not trying to clear your mind as much as observe it. As noted in the book having the goal to clear your mind can be futile for those wIth thought disorders. This is a great guide to go along with the mindfulness book and also as a stand alone text. Some of the exercise presented may be a little difficult for those who haven't meditated before to grasp. For me personally when learning to meditate it was always more helpful to have an actual voice recording or live person to help guide me and provide gentle reminders. But I think Jon and Shala did a very thorough job in communicating posture and what an overall meditation session should be.

I love the compassion section as well. For those dealing with mental disorders self compassion can be overlooked even when seeking therapy. But it is crucial to
Practice compassion. I feel a book like this is needed because it helps you deal with the other issues of guilt, and low self esteem that may come along with mental disorders. As most books help you deal with the disorder itself and not the (collateral damage)so to speak, it can cause in its presence.

Overall this book IMHO is not just for those with OCD but can be used for a wide range of mental disorders. And for those without a disorder but is easily anxious, and stressed.
