I thought Ms Cole had reached peak steam by the end of the original mafia wars series which gradually built up to Finn - who turned out to be the Mack daddy of dirty bad boys in that series…
Well these Italian boys are both proving correct the long lived assumptions that they know all about the language of love, as well as notching up the steam rating book by book. We are so off the charts now I’m kind of scared about where Tristano might take things!
But anyway, back to Massimo and Katiya.
“It's like having Prince Charming at your fingertips and the insight it's not going to last.” this quote sums up the crux of this storyline for me.
I’m trying to recall the last H who fell so hard so quickly for a h in this extended series. Obrecht and Liam were the closest I think, but Massimo (true to his Italian roots) goes all in, all the way from the get go with his brain struggling to keep up with his heart for a long while. And when it does, it’s clear his words are still from the heart and despite all appearances to the contra, Katiya isn’t what she seems and needs him, even if this drives a wedge between him and his family.
Katiya is caught in the perfect storm. Experiencing true love for the first time and yet knowing what is coming she is scared yet entranced by the future Massimo dangles in front of her. Knowing what happened in the past (trigger warnings) and what would happen in her future she allows fear to drive her actions and thoughts for the longest time whilst battling her love for Massimo.
Once again a level of complexity in this book means an assumed knowledge of characters and past sorry lines so not one necessarily to read as a stand-alone, but the storylines move along at pace inside and outside the core elements of Massimo/Katiya and their relationship. Some themes are neatly tied up, others made more complex, some remain unsolved as yet such as how Katiya mends the broken start she had with the other wives/girlfriends and especially Arianna. characters are brought in and out of the stories with great clarity. I’m loving how Brigette's brothers are building up their page time and this feels like a fab direction this series will go (after Luca/Garrett hopefully!!)
I especially liked the Tully / Angelo dynamic and their shared frustrations over their progenies actions and disobedience. I’m quite looking forward to seeing what the punishment was/is for the latest infractions ;).
