So I have to start by saying I was almost shocked to realise this was an aly martinez book, I downloaded a bunch at the same time and didn't look before I dived into this one after reading the blurb. So I fully expected from the synopsis an emotional read and, to an extent it was, however I feel like it lacked some kind of serious punch. Ugh I've re wrote this 3 times now because I keep rambling about the same points so il try and be more eloquent. First off, I didnt mind the first bit going to the past, I think it adds substance when a writer does that, however, knowing the gist of the book, I personally don't feel I needed to know the intimate details about him and Sarah. Yes I wanted to know about that day, how long they were together etc maybe even a few of the things that were mentioned, but the more it went into detail the more I thought to myself 'how are we going to believe he falls in love again after this when he literally has something perfect'? He literally states this a lot in the book so I wanted him to at least be blown away by an epic woman. Now, it would've been an insult to assume his next relationship would fall seamlessly the same way, but unfortunately, in the end I actually think it didn't measure up to what he had at all which is why the 3 stars. I am fully aware there are many forms of love etc and that it can be unexpected but this was a little contradictory to Brett himself as he seems to not even know what he wants from Jesse through majority of this book, despite knowing her for months, he doesn't really see her except her witt. And after their first date which let's be honest, I was all for her backing out of because no one wants to feel like a pity date, he states a friendship but changes his mind that night... Meanwhile after a couple months he can't actually say if he wants a relationship or not because he doesn't wanna hurt her knowing she loves him, and constantly tries to not delve into what needs to be spoken about, and when something comes up regarding the ex, he doesn't give Jesse the space she needs, no, he bombards her eveytime (after dealing with said ex first) because he can't stand to lose her. While all this is happening the way she gives in It makes her seem a bit of a doormat, like her character minutely digressed from being a little confident to being shy and it started grating on me a bit because she was a lovely character, but I honestly feel like there are a couple times where it would've come in handy for her to say let's have a break given all the crap she got but when he called her by the exes name? Nope! All bets are off, in real life, one would think a time out was needed just to make sure you weren't a stand in for someone else, and I unfortunately felt that was exactly the case here, because frankly all she ever did was basically say 'he's just so sexy' as a reason to forgive all. And she does, the same night. There's some weird stuff at the end even though it's in Jesse's pov apparantly she wasn't in the house so I dunno about that mad moment but this is where Brett finally sees the light all of a sudden. And while we are on the subject, there was so many exclamations used between these two and their dialogue that it made Brett and jesse seem like a silly kind of guy and an immature girl when thats not how I think the author planned for him to be written given his baggage. There's no doubt this was an alright read but I just expected more and thats my personal opinion. I was skeptical for book 2 but I wanted a couple questions answered and know that despite it not being my fave, aly martinez is a great author and I wasn't disappointed so I'm still getting book 2.5 and 3 now

Holy emotional rollercoaster! This book didn't just pull on my heart strings, it grabbed ahold of them and didn't let go until the very last page. This book was so well written I felt like I was a part of the story, it gave me a real case of the 'feels'!
Brett met Sarah when he was twenty-one years old. They fell hopelessly and madly in love, got married and were living their happily ever after. Until one night when tragedy struck in the form of a car accident. Sarah and her best friend Manda were in that car. Brett, a detective, and his partner and best friend Caleb, who was also Manda's fiance, got the call from dispatch alerting them to the accident. And as thery were racing to the scene the only information they had was that there had been one fatality and one injured. That night Brett's life irrevocably changed, his world as he knew it was over. That night he lost his wife. Sarah survived the accident but she was forever altered.
Four years later Brett meets Jesse, sweet, shy, feisty when pushed Jesse. Only Brett's past is still very much a part of his present and keeps getting in the way, or rather he is allowing it to get in the way.
This is one tragic story that made me feel so many emotions, the characters and their story got in my head and embedded themselves in my heart, I couldn't stop reading until I knew what became of them. I was totally engrossed, I read this book in one sitting because it demanded to be finished, I don't think I even had a choice in the matter!
This is a brilliant, emotional read that will suck you in from the first page. I highly recommend you experience this journey and get to know these characters.

Jesse was so sweet and lovely, I think we could have been great friends. She is small like me and eats sweets in colour order just like me. I swear I cannot eat jelly beans/fruit gums without arranging them all. Bordering on OCD.

Brett is not only a sexy policeman but a detective!

I loved the plot with the crazy bitch wife. Reminded me of Jane Eyre. I loved the dialogue between the characters.

To write passages in a book where the character is talking to the reader is tricky. Alice Clayton is a master of it, but I thought the passages in this were a bit clunky.

Overall a great read.

A masterpiece of a story

I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, it wasn't what I was thinking it would be at all and it blew my socks off.

Sarah and Brett have the sort of relationship people envy, fiery, passionate and fun. A terrible incident changes their lives forever. Brett struggles to move on with his life until Jesse makes him see things are not as black as they seem. Unfortunately, the past will not leave them alone.

I loved the story, devastatingly touching in places and heartbreaking in others. The characters are well crafted, I loved Jesse and Brett.

A brilliant read.

Because I read a ton of books it takes an exceptional read to spur me into writing a review but I loved this one; it took me on an emotional roller-coaster, so much so that I had to stop halfway through & read something lighthearted before going back to it. I felt for all the characters and desperately wanted a happy ending for all of them! I await the next in the series.
