(Falling Stars # 2)
Written by: A. L. Jackson
I stalk A. L. Jackson when I’m on the Amazon site. What shall I read next? Just prior to the holidays I finished Leif and Mia’s story Kiss The Stars, so now mid January it was time to figure out what my next read would be. Easy, the next book in the Falling Stars series.
From the first words of the prologue I was hooked. There was very little that had me putting this book down. I didn’t want to stop reading. It was Carolina George’s turn and what a story.
There was going to be dark in this book and it was evident that the darkness was going to envelop the band but how exactly we didn’t know. Royce is there for more than just signing the band to a contract. It takes time but eventually readers will find out and when I did, wow he is a protector until the end.
Emily has been struggling for a few months it’s easy to see something has happened. She is having trouble writing, she is having trouble on stage and she is keeping secrets. She does however, feel a calmness come over her when Royce is around.
This story held me, it twisted, it had turns both good and bad and in the end it left me wanting a bit. Then I put together what it was, I knew immediately that I had to move onto the next book. A. L. Jackson whispered through her words, there’s more to this story.
Catch Me When I Fall is book 2 in the Falling Stars series. It is standalone. It is the story of Emily, the lead singer of Carolina George, and Royce, an executive from a record label. Good lord I love these two so much! I was hooked on their story from the first page. It grabbed me and made me feel so many emotions. They each have been hurt and feel such a deep pain. Pain they didn't think they could get past. Their attraction was immediate and intense, soul deep. Their road to a HEA, twisted. More twisted, and intertwined, than Emily could have known. Protective Royce was right there for her, to catch her when she fell. My words will never be able to do this book justice and 5 stars are not enough!
I tell you, I had to take numerous breaks as my stomach was in knots for a good portion of this story. Jackson brilliantly leaves a trail of hints throughout each chapter about what Royce has done in the past and what will eventually transpire in the very near future. His intentions towards Emily and her tight-knit band, Carolina George seem honorable but the inner thoughts we are privy to definitely had me on edge knowing that whatever would happen, might obliterate both Royce and the woman he is desperate to keep.
The selfless Emily is filled with anxiety as she and her brother, Richard, together with band-mates Rhys and Leif are on the cusp of stardom. This quartet is loyal to a fault and Emily has a fierce determination to not let what she think she knows about her brother ruin their chances. I was impressed by her being able to find a way back creatively, albeit with great trepidation, with the stalwart Royce as her unexpected muse. With her new man tied up as the A&R man for Mylton Records and primary go between, there is a whole lot to lose, both professional and personally.
But make no mistake about it this is a heart-wrenching love story at its core that happens to have the cutthroat music business as the ever-changing backdrop. There are familiar characters who make an appearance and in turn, had me comparing this story a bit to the first Bleeding Hearts book about the band Sunder. Royce and Emily love as fiercely as Baz and Shea did and do and I was on the edge of my seat once more, hoping that everything would turn out the way it should.
Again, despite the fact that Royce and Emily find themselves inextricably drawn to the other at first glance, it all makes sense in the end. But with a truly beautiful last few chapters that warmed my heart completely, I was beyond fulfilled. In addition, I cherished the fact that we didn’t really know who would ultimately catch who, since both Royce and Emily seemed to be on the precipice of falling hard, both personally and professionally.
A.L. Jackson continues to be a go-to author for me, one who crafts stories that are tender, sexy, passionate and most importantly, full of a kind of love that makes me sigh and swoon over and over again.
With that said, I happily give Catch Me When I Fall a huge 5 stars!
In comes Royce Reilly, the A&R person for Mylton Records. His sole purpose is to get the band to sign, and he needs Emily on board with that plan. The only thing is, he didn't count on falling for her.
Amy brings us another emotional story full of ups and downs. It's very clear from the get go that both Emily and Royce have experienced some things that have left them both broken. Initially starting the book, I felt a little bit like I was lagging behind the narrative, almost like I walked in on a conversation in the middle, but it didn't take me long to get up to speed.
The attraction between Royce and Emily is instant, both finding a kindred spirit in the other. Any type of relationship would be a conflict of interest, but they just can't stay away. Royce feels so familiar to Emily, though she can't figure out why, and it brings her a sense of comfort and security she hasn't felt in so long. And Emily speaks to Royce's soul, filling up that emptiness he's felt for way too long.
There's an underlying current of anxiety that constantly ran through the story. Something has obviously happened to Emily, that she's trying to recover from and it's affecting her creativity and her performances. But she can't talk about it with anyone because it would cause irreparable damage to the band and especially her brother. But Royce is perfectly attuned to Emily and he feels like the only one she can turn to. Meanwhile, Royce is battling demons of his own, and Amy does an amazing job of unveiling slowly, over the course of the story, exactly what has happened to both Emily and Royce.
It was super fun getting to catch up with the Sunder boys again for a little bit. And going along on tour with Caroline George was a treat, too!
I needn't have worried that Amy would give these two broken souls a happy ending. My only complaint on that is it ended way too abruptly for my liking. But since there are a couple more books in the series, I have no doubt we'll be spending plenty more time with Royce and Emily.
Long time fans of Amy are going to eat this story up!! I can't wait to see who is next in the Carolina George series!
