The novel teems with extraordinary characters - Elias Smith the outcast saviour, the religious zealot Mozzie Fishman, the murderous mayor Stan Bruiser, the moth-ridden Captain Nicoli Finn, the activist and prodigal son Will Phantom, and above all, the queen of the rubbish-dump Angel Day and her sea-faring husband Normal Phantom, the fish-embalming king of time - figures that stride like giants across this storm-swept world.

J'ai vraiment essayé d'apprécier ce livre que je devais étudier pour l'université. J'en sors assez troublé qu'il soit présenté comme un modèle d'écriture. L'histoire est discontinue à un point qu'on ne sait plus ce que l'auteur raconte, à qui elle le raconte et même qui la raconte. Les personnages sont incohérents, incompréhensibles et ambivalents. Vouloir renouveler les codes du roman ne veut pas dire tout casser et s'extasier devant les morceaux éparpillés comme si un nouveau big bang avait eu lieu. Quoiqu'en disent des profs d'université avec une tête trop grosse pour eux, ce livre est bien plus un échec dans la quête du renouvellement du genre romanesque que son brillant aboutissement. Reconnaître ce fait évident rendrait déjà la lecture des 500 pages moins indigeste.

I had to read this book for school and though I'm fond of reading I found this one totally boring.
The story is quite a mess in my opinion so that it is hard to follow the characters and their actions (if actions there are!). As it is about a different culture and way of life it is even more difficult to understand the process of narration. Maybe I have to read it a second time to understand but... 500 pages are too much to spend time on when the story doesn't attract me!

The writing takes typical Australian idioms and recontextualises them in a way that tricks the eye. At first the tendency is to read quickly because so many familiar turns of phrase appear, but you quickly find yourself stumbling over sentences and upon closer inspection realise that the familiar has been subtly altered. I found it tough going for the first part of the book, until I decided to read a chapter out loud. Doing this I suddenly found a clarity in the writing that I'd been missing when I'd been reading too fast. From this point I found the unusual prose began to flow beautifully and quickly realised I'd stumbled onto an incredible voice.

By about halfway in I was completely mesmerised - I really don't feel I've had this transportive an experience in a novel for a long time. I started reading The Goldfinch afterwards, which I'm really enjoying, but I miss the strange, haunting language and slowly unravelling mystery of Carpentaria. I'm looking forward to a couple of rereads in the years to come.

An amazing Novel. I love the description of the Waanyi landscape and its people around are much connected with their atmosphere. As I read, no wonder I traveled with Normal Phantom's family and felt like I am Will Phantom who opposed the Mine owners. The mystic beliefs and culture of Waanyi Aboriginals elevated my curiousness.

What a book. It is multi layered which mixes the daily humdrum life of small town Australia with the incredibly complex spirit word of the First Australians. It is compelling in its intensity, beautiful lyrical style and vision. This is an absolute must read book.
