A deadly game of cat-and-mouse has them fighting to stay one step ahead of the brilliant serial killer -- or see their fateful romance cut short by unspeakable tragedy.
Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell have landed in America, a bold, brash land unlike the genteel streets of London. But like London, the city of Chicago hides its dark secrets well. When the two attend the spectacular World's Fair, they find the once-in-a-lifetime event tainted with reports of missing people and unsolved murders.
Determined to help, Audrey Rose and Thomas begin their investigations, only to find themselves facing a serial killer unlike any they've encountered before. Identifying him is one thing, but capturing him---and getting dangerously lost in the infamous Murder Hotel he constructed as a terrifying torture device---is another.
Will Audrey Rose and Thomas see their last mystery to the end---together and in love---or will their fortunes finally run out when their most depraved adversary makes one final, devastating kill?

Revue de presse
*"A marvelous yet somewhat gruesome mystery...an unexpected twist makes the ending worth the wait. A must-have."
"Kerri Maniscalco once again combines adventure, romance, murder and Victorian manners into an intoxicating cocktail that brings the story of this tenacious young forensic scientist to a satisfying conclusion."―Knoxville News Sentinel
"Maniscalco has created a serious, sharp-minded, and forward-thinking protagonist in Audrey Rose, whose fearlessness will endear her to readers looking for an engaging historical thriller. Abundant red herrings and a dash of romance round out this gruesome but engrossing story."
--- Publisher's Weekly
"Audrey is a young woman eager to use her brains and willing to flaunt society's rules....This mystery pays homage to classics like Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein [and] will satisfy those readers looking for historical mystery, a witty heroine, and a little romance."
---School Library Connection
"Audrey Rose is a witty, resourceful feminist who refuses to bow to Victorian-era gender norms. This dark, gothic landscape is peopled with nuanced, diverse characters who keep readers enthralled. A gripping mystery with a compelling heroine and just the right touch of romance."
"Every sentence of this novel drips with decadence. The settings and Midnight Carnival performances are lush yet dangerous, beautiful yet terrifying. It was easy to understand just how Audrey Rose comes to be so enthralled with the Midnight Carnival and the performers because, as readers, we're put under the same exact spell.... Masterfully crafted."

I have been putting off finishing this book for so long, because I didn’t want to finish it. My love for this series and the characters... there are no words.. 😭 this book had me in tears at the beginning and at the end. Even as I write this review now I am crying.. my love for series is eternal and it is so so important to me. It will forever hold a place in my heart. I will miss this series so much.
I didn’t fathom it possible after escaping from Houdini but this book ripped my heart from my chest. The pain.. god! I felt their pain and it was awful. I wanted to throw the book at a wall becuase I didn’t want it to happen. Not to them. I literally cried with them. It has been an honour to watch Cressworths relationship blossom over the 4 books. Their love is what every child dreams of having. Their love is so raw, pure , real and utterly unbreakable. I could feel the raw love and passion flowing from each page. If it were a perfume I would of been knocked out. To see not only their relationship grow but to see their characters grow and develop has been truly mesmerising. Their love isn’t artificial primarily based on their appearances. It goes somernly beyond that, it cuts deep with the soul and mentally. Their bond is the definition of beautiful. This is what love really is, Thomas Cresswell and Audrey Roses bond is love. Real love. I have so much love for them, it is limitless.
The book where do I begin? Characters from the previous books came back as to almost bid farewell to the readers and bring back nostalgia. The writing, the narration is nothing but astonishing. Apart seeing all the characters grow we have seen Maniscalco grow as an author. This finale was worth the wait. the saucy scenes were beautifully written and full of so much love. It wasn’t cheap or lustful. It was pure raw passion out of love
You could feel Roses pure anger and to protect those she loved. It was a scent coming off the pages. I mean.. I think we all felt the same way when Thomas got poisoned..
When she entered the hotel the writing was so vivid I could feel what she was feeling from the poisonous gas. I loved that too, I wonder if that’s what the ‘castle’ was truly like?
