Reasons you should read Birthday Girl

-> All the 80's reference
-> The slow burn - I wasn't expecting it. I thought I would get dirty but even if the sexual tension was everywhere, slowly the feelings sets in. PERFECT
-> Theangst - with taboo stories comes all the angst and more. There was plenty. A good balance between good and bad, right and wrong.
-> Pike Lawson! The perfect MAN. 38 years old. Independent, hard worker, lonely but not hopeless, ready to help his kid whenever he needs with whatever he wants. He's also protective and falling for the one girl he shouldn't. Fighting it but eventually feeling become too strong.
-> Jordan. She has become one of my favorite heroine of all the time!!. 19 years old. Not a br**, not a tease. She deals with life the way she can. Strong-minded, brave, determined and bad*** from page 1.

And now I'm patiently waiting for Motel and more Tyler! Mysterious Tyler.

3,0 sur 5 étoilesA nice reading but not fully convinced

The plot is simple and quite predictable, no big plot twist, but well written and entertaining. I liked having both point of views ,Pike's and Jordan's, however I didn't get what made him fall for her. I can understand that Jordan, after all she went through fell for an independent, strong a caring man. But what about him? I had the impression he just likes her because she's hot and can make tacos and clean the house. That's all. Speaking of hotness, spicy scenes are really steamy and I am ok with this, although I've found them kind of repetitive. How many times do we really need to read that he is hard? I don't want to spoil the end but I found it a little unrealistic too. Anyway it was a nice discovery of the author and despite I am not totally satisfied with this story I may give her another chance reading another book from her

That wasn't bad. Pretty much everything is in : nice and funny characters who actually don't make you want to slap them, realistic, sexy without being ridiculous and/or repetitive, avoids most sexist tropes.
But that wasn't good, either. Nothing original is there. Everything is predictable. Everything is too nice. Nothing rubs either way. It's a pretty, slow and steady choo-choo train of a romance. Or a kind of rabbit. Soft, inoffensive, cute and bouncy but ultimately without much conversation.

This was my very first Penelope Douglas book ever, which felt like an important milestone in and of itself, as many of my friends adore her writing so much! I’m fairly new to the adult contemporary scene (though not new to this type of book, as I used to read them online a lot—but it’s been a long time!), so I wasn’t one hundred percent sure what to expect, but I knew going into it that I loved the idea of the plot, as I’ve always been a sucker for age gap romances. (I blame a lifetime of books about teen girls hooking up with several-hundred-year-old paranormal entities.)

With the age gap does come some issues that I’ll list right off the bat to get them out of the way: there is a lot that could be said for power imbalances here, not just because of the age gap, but because Jordan lives in Pike’s home rent-free, which is obviously going to leave some potential for a less than healthy relationship. While the story never plays into that problem, in my opinion, there’s also the issue that Pike’s age seems to sometimes make him think he gets a free pass for being overly dominating towards Jordan’s life choices, but I’ll get to that in a minute. The other content warnings I’ll mention here are mentions of previous abuse from a significant other, quite a bit of (mostly unchallenged) slut-shaming, and emotional/physical cheating in multiple pairings.

I’ll tackle the good things first: this is a bit of a slow burn (which I’m always a fan of), and the romance honestly feels really genuine and sweet. You find yourself rooting for Jordan and Pike from day one, and it just gets better as they grow accustomed to one another’s company and conversation and learn to be friends and companions before acknowledging their budding feelings for one another. There’s also killer chemistry literally from the night they meet, and watching that unfold is fantastic. The sex itself is well-written for the most part, and not over the top—I’m no prude at all and don’t mind sex in my books, but I personally enjoy character development and drama to go along with it, and this book definitely covers all of the bases!

For negatives, however, I’ve got quite a few of those, too. The biggest problem I had with this book is Pike’s attitude. While reading the book, he irked me a bit but didn’t upset me too much, but by the time I had given myself a few days to think on it, I realized I was actually incredibly annoyed by how he treated Jordan through most of the story. He’s very overly dominating, and while that would be fine if it was in a BSDM “kink” sort of aspect (as I am never here to kink-shame anyone, ever!), it doesn’t come across that way at all. Instead, it feels like an overly possessive, temperamental “father figure” telling her what she can and can’t wear, who she can and can’t hang out with, and where she can or can’t go. I’ll say that for the most part, Pike is super sweet and caring and mature, but his temper comes and goes so fast that it gave me whiplash sometimes.

The only other negatives that I have are pretty minor: I thought Jordan was really immature from time to time (though those moments were rare—I mostly really liked her character), and some of the sexual stuff was unrealistic and downright painful to read about (that loofah scene? Ouch!). Maybe I’m too much of a pragmatist here, but it definitely takes me out of the story during moments like that. There’s also some treatment of sex workers that made me feel super uncomfortable. Jordan’s sister is a stripper, and while I think her character is written in a way that’s meant to be sex-positive, the way everyone else treats her is so over the top with slut-shaming and grossness that I felt like I was being sent very mixed signals, especially since most of the slut-shaming is never challenged (especially when it comes from Pike). It doesn’t help that Jordan herself, despite swearing she respects and loves her sister immensely, comes off as extremely judge-y from time to time.

My final complaint is probably one of those “it’s not you, it’s me” things: I was expecting a legitimate love triangle, but honestly, it’s so one-sided that it’s impossible to root for Cole, like… ever. He’s painted so obviously as a villain that it makes his presence feel like a prop, and then the ending with his redemption arc was just kind of gross and unnecessary. (Actually, that entire epilogue was unnecessary, but I’ll let that one go.)

All in all, I did enjoy reading this book—it was definitely addictive and I didn’t want to put it down until I finished it, so I think it deserves 3 stars for that aspect alone. That said, if it hadn’t been so addictive, I think this would be getting a much lower rating based on the issues I described above. All of this in mind, I will definitely be giving Penelope’s writing another try in the near future, as most of the people I buddy read this book with told me that many of her other titles are much better than this one!

This is the 1st book I've read by Penelope Douglas. I've had this book on my TBR for a while now. I thought it would be perfect to read a book. Overall the book wasn't bad I gave it about 3 1⁄2 stars. Because of how young the main female protagonist was, kind of made it a little bit cringey.

I absolutely hated the ex-boyfriend Cole, 1) for hanging out with Jordan's ex who had gotten physical with her on a few occasions. 2) He's supposedly hated his dad for cheating on his mom when he was young. And yet he cheats on Jordan for weeks on end. Instead of being honest with her.

Now I get with Pike because it does seem weird to be attracted to a very young girl that's the same age as his son. he wants to screw Jordan but he keeps referring to her as a child throughout the book. As for Jordan based on some of the dialog it really shows her age in the things she says.1 of the things I found to be very funny was when they Hooked up for the 1st time he's asking her what does she want and she can even say the proper terms because she's embarrassed.

The book doesn't on a happy note So I guess after much tribulations they get passed it and they eventually together and start a family together.

This was long. And a lot of the time hard to read, if I’m honest. I liked the main characters, the way they met was just lovely. But then it descended into feelings of sadness- the rejection and heartbreak our girl had to go through, it just felt very real, and like sometimes it was trivialised. Also Coles just the worst! Argh. I started this review thinking it was mostly positive, but as I ramble on I realise how much it upset me. Also they did not stop mentioning age. We get it, you’re older.
There were some lovely tender moments, which I did enjoy.

1,0 sur 5 étoiles There's taboo, and then there's gross.

I read this because it was highly recommended on booktube, and I was looking for a steamy romance. A taboo romance could be interesting, if done well. This was not.

MINOR SPOILERS BELOW

Let's talk about the age difference first. In one of the earlier chapters in Pike's POV, we learn that he is 38, and Jordan is 19 (just turned). When I got to that line, I loudly said, in a room by myself, "Oh, no!" However, it made more sense as the book went on. Pike is horrible, and only a nineteen-year-old with such little life and relationship experience (like Jordan) would put up with his crap despite how physically attractive he is.

Pike was often physically rough with Jordan, and it made me cringe hard because it was never addressed. The first time they kiss, right before it happens, he grabs her face roughly, squeezing and yelling at her. She almost cries from his behavior because it's pretty horrifying. Then the next moment they're making out against the side of the house. There's also a scene where he picks her up off the ground, carries her over his shoulder to her room, spanks her (like a bad parent would do to a child), throws her on her bed, and screams at her to go to sleep. Naturally, this is the precursor to them having sex for the first time.

Pike is also horribly possessive and controlling, something Jordan, in her youthful inexperience, mistakes as an endearing protectiveness. He stalks her around town when she's not home, getting pouty and pissy whenever other men notice her body (and she shows it off a lot, which is her right). Of course, he then scolds her for it, and his inner monologue lets the reader know it's because he doesn't like other men looking at "what's his." He criticizes almost all her decisions, such as outright forbidding her go out on a date and get to know someone new after Cole cheats on her. He says, and I quote, "You'll thank me when you're not getting date-raped." WHAT? WHAAAAAAT? And these are just a couple examples of his behavior.

I also found it really gross how he was constantly referring to her as "kid" or "little girl." Maybe it was meant to reflect his own issues with their age difference, but he would say those things while still looking at her sexually, so that juxtaposition was jarring.

As for Jordan, she internally justifies Pike's behavior, provably because, you know, she's only nineteen. I really wanted to see her stand up for herself, which the book claims she does, but I didn't see it. Pike often comments on her mouth, and how when he gives her crap, she fires back at him. The only problem is that didn't really happen, at least not to the extent required by the story to establish boundaries. I suppose she kind of stands up for herself a bit better at the end of the book, but it wasn't satisfying. She comes across as a weak character for the whole book, easily steamrolled.

One of the biggest questions for me, and I still couldn't figure it out after completing the book, was why they even fell in love in the first place. It truly seemed like they were just two attractive people in each other's vicinity, therefore...love? Pike apologizes to Cole late in the book, saying he really tried not to fall for Jordan, but they never talk about Pike's feelings beyond his apology, which was disapponting since it was the prime opportunity to answer this mystery. Maybe I could have felt some chemistry between them if I wasn't getting whiplash from Pike's all-over-the-place toxic behavior. There was also a huge missed opportunity for heart-to-heart conversations between Cam/Jordan and Dutch/Pike that could have really helped our main characters work through their feelings for each other and explain it more for the reader.

For the most part the supporting characters were one-dimensional. They were stereotyped caricature roadblocks to Pike and Jordan getting together, such as the character of April. The only character I really liked was Shel, who flat-out told Pike to his face that Cole was a PoS loser.

Now to the story itself - there really isn't much to be found. At just over 400 pages (on kindle), this book is WAY too long. It really drags, especially in the first 60%, as the main characters spend most of that time just eyeing each other and arguing. Over and over and over. It was a true challenge to get through, and I often found myself skimming through large sections.

The one plus is that once we finally got some sex scenes, they were plentiful, well-written, and enjoyable to read. It just took way too long to get there.

Overall, this book was not worth the time investment. Nothing happened and even by the end, their relationship still didn't make sense to me. Find something else to read.

So I'm going to go ahead and justify that it is okay in Acotar that Feyra is 18 and her lover 500. Why because it's a fantasy. Freya and to become an adult to save her family and there's the whole mate thing and being equals. I will even justify twilight too. That's right i said it. But Jordan and Pike made me feel uneasy. This was just too unrealistic for a non-fantastical story.

At times Jordan acted like a tantrum-throwing child and Pike her father then all of the sudden it would switch to lust. So I warred with myself on how I could compare this to the fae books I read and well I just did. There is too much of a power imbalance. Jordan cannot take care of herself. She did not go thru enough to become wise yet. Pike has had a child. He is set in life and wants for nothing. I cannot express how cringy it was for Pike to tell Jordan to go to her room and then proceed to have fantasies about her.

The inner thoughts which they often do seem to get repetitive. And as it often does as soon as the romance fixed in place the corny words spewed forth. Eww. After a little while, I thought maybe nothing was wrong with the age gap because they both start acting like teenagers, throwing fits and acting out to make each other jealous. Ugh and really, never trust a man that calls you baby.

I now want to pore bleach in my eyes and wash this book away from my thoughts.

Commenté aux États-Unis 🇺🇸 le 8 mars 2022

Doing the right thing even if it hurts. Birthday Girl is an unconventional off-limits romance with an age-gap with her boyfriend’s father.
It’s Jordan’s nineteenth birthday. She was supposed to celebrate with her boyfriend Cole. Instead she went to a late night movie by herself. Turns out her boyfriend got them kicked out of the apartment they were living in. To save money they moved into Pike’s home.
At nineteen Jordan works, goes to school, and pays bills. It’s a lot of responsibility to tackle at a young age. Her mom left when she was four leaving her older sister Cam to look after her. Her dad abandoned them when he re-married. Cole’s been her lifeline, but lately he’s been behaving recklessly.
I’m a huge fan of forbidden taboo love stories, but this one didn’t go dark or into the land of taboo. The premise is right up my alley except for the minute details outlining every slow move. Penelope took her time building the relationships. Maybe it’s Jordan’s age that read wrong for me because I just didn’t find a vetted interest in the day-to-day activities taking place at least not the way the information was written. It was a bit wordy in my opinion.
I’ve read a few Penelope Douglas books and thought I’d invest in her backlist, but so far I’m not liking the ones I’ve read. I started with Credence then moved onto Tryst Six Venom. Birthday Girl is my third attempt. I’ve lost momentum in her writing voice. It’s not peaking my interest or sustaining a long lasting interest. Im so bummed because I’ve invested in both the ebooks and audiobooks.
I was creeped out by Pike’s character. When they were behaving without inappropriate thoughts I enjoyed the ease of the relationship. Unfortunately, this story and it’s characters isn’t working for me. The writing voice isn’t grabbing my attention. Penelope is known for her forbidden taboo content which is a huge draw for me. I was looking forward to this age-gap romance with her off-limits boyfriends father. Pike’s got great work ethics setting a good example for Jordan. I could only see him as a father figure as someone for her to admire since she didn’t have good role models growing up. I was rooting for them not getting romantically involved. I desperately needed Pike to control himself and prove that some men can still protect young girls without being physical. Jordan’s never had to answer to any parental figure so living with Pike and his concern is disconcerting to her.
Then there’s the issue of Pike trying to mend a strained relationship with his son Cole at the same time he’s pining for his girlfriend.

Everything about her is young except for her interest in 80s music and the adult responsibilities of money, job, and bills. Penelope circled around the father type of taboo for quite some time. She pushed this issue to the point that I no longer wanted a romance to happen. Jordan’s still immature despite all the adult responsibilities when factoring her behavior into the equation it’s not as taboo as I would like. I’m not entirely sold on the concept of this nineteen year professing adulthood because her body has developed like a woman when her immature actions beg to differ.
Unfortunately, this book didn’t hit its mark. The idea of it sounded bigger than it was. It wasn’t taboo or forbidden enough. It was a minor inconvenience that should’ve been sorted out better. I can’t say I liked any one of the characters because despite there age they all had flaws of immaturity. Paying bills, having a job, or owning a house are adult responsibilities yet do not make a person more mature. I struggled with how immature all these characters behaved trying to become a responsible adult.

Narrators:
Unabridged audiobook. Love the alternating points of view with two dual performers voicing the words.
Andrew Eiden performed the role of Pike
Jennifer Mack performed the role of Jordan
Both are amazing performers. I appreciated the opportunity to listen to both. I’m grateful for these two narrators voicing these characters and keeping me entertained.

It was alright. I found it entertaining but somewhat annoying near the end. I found the FMC annoying. Especially at the end where if the MMC didn’t declare his love for her, then the whole relationship is over. Completely disregarding that the MMC had a whole life, family, and friends that he could lose. I felt like he was more pressured come out in making their relationship official.

Overall, the book was enjoyable, no regrets in reading
