Anomalies is the kind of book that manages to ask existential questions in a fun and suspenseful way. This fast-paced, twisty-turny sequel to Echoes features an exciting cast of teenagers with extraordinary abilities. Laura, the protagonist, is the heart of the group of paranormally gifted teens -- but her gift seems remarkably unimpressive in comparison to the abilities of her peers. The fact that Laura needs to learn how to step back and let others step up creates some very interesting internal conflict for her. The supporting characters have real personalities, and several of them are flawed in ways that are challenging to sympathize with, but Laura doesn't dismiss these characters but actively tries to reach out to them -- with surprising results that are very educational for the book's young target audience.
The different ways in which the anomalies' parents deal with their abilities can be understood as an allegory for puberty. Some kids are lucky enough to have parents who embrace their uniqueness while others are confronted with a lack of understanding or outright rejection and abandonment once they develop in ways their parents don't understand or approve of. Sadly, there are too many kids whose parents don't love them the way they're supposed to. Let's hope that some of these kids will feel seen and understood when they read Anomalies. The cost of having superpowers is also explored in detail, which will appeal to teens whose identity and choices deviate from the values of their communities. Finally, Lete's style is as accessible as it is engaging! Laura's first-person POV works extremely well for this story. I flew through this book in under three hours and imagine that any mature middle-grade reader or teen just starting to explore YA would do the same.
