AFTER YOU'D GONE is the groundbreaking debut novel from the Costa-Award winning Maggie O'Farrell, author of THIS MUST BE THE PLACE and I AM, I AM, I AM. It is a stunning, best-selling novel of wrenching love and grief.
A distraught young woman boards a train at King's Cross to return to her family in Scotland. Six hours later, she catches sight of something so terrible in a mirror at Waverley Station that she gets on the next train back to London.
AFTER YOU'D GONE follows Alice's mental journey through her own past, after a traffic accident has left her in a coma. A love story that is also a story of absence, and of how our choices can reverberate through the generations, it slowly draws us closer to a dark secret at a family's heart.

Book Description
With Alice's life hanging in the balance, her family gathers at her bedside. As they wait, argue, and remember, long-buried tensions rise to the surface. The more they talk, the more, it seems, they conceal from each other. Alice, meanwhile, sliding between different levels of consciousness, recalls her past and a recent love affair. Skipping around in time, knitting together the different points of view with astonishing dexterity and beautiful prose, Maggie O'Farrell has created a story of love and family relationships that is reminiscent of the very best of Edna O'Brien and Mary Gordon. With one of the most heart-stopping openings in modern fiction, After You'd Gone is a work of extraordinary psychological depth and impressive maturity. --Ce texte fait référence à l'édition kindle_edition.

An involving and moving story of loss and love - both familial love and passionate love - and one in which the author also looks at dysfunctional families and at religious beliefs and of the effect these beliefs can have on those who are believers and non-believers. Moving continually backwards and forwards in time, this is a novel which keeps the reader 'on their toes', but one which kept me engaged throughout and although this is Maggie O'Farrell's first novel, I think it's possibly her best (although I ought to add here that I haven't yet read 'Hamnet').
5 Stars.

Whenever someone asks the 'What's your favourite book?' question, this book is always within my answer, as like most bookworms that question is impossible to answer with a single book.
I absolutely adored this book, both of the times that I've read it. I love the way it jumps between the past and present and how the story unfolds.
I have read and loved quite a few of Maggie's other books over the years now too.
I have recommended this book to countless people, as in my opinion its a must read.

There are 372 pages split into small, unnumbered chapters. The book has a prologue and is divided into 3 parts.
The narrative jumps around in time. This makes the reader concentrate on the story as you need to be sure about what part of Alice's story is being revealed. Whilst this ensures engagement from the start, I found that I quickly relaxed into the flow of the story and accepted each change without even thinking about it. The planning of the chronology is amazing, the story gradually unfolds at the various times, slowly revealing details with perfect timing as if putting pieces into a jigsaw.
MO plays with the tenses, swapping from first person to third person to emphasise the more emotional sections. It is genuinely surprising how subtle yet effective this technique is - swapping the focus from being inside Alice's head to just observing yet being at the same scene - watching Alice's reactions rather than being a part of them.
Reading this book I am able to block out everything around and stayed up for hours one night to try to finish it. At the start I wasn't sure what the book was going to be about and loved how the author seemed to gently manipulate me into caring about all of these characters. I wanted to know more and more about them, then felt some grief when I got to the end of the book.
There are some huge stories in the plot which I wasn't expecting but they are cleverly balanced with the more mundane detail of life.
It's been a while since I read a book by this author and I've enjoyed this one so much that I'm going to look for some more.
Of course, this author handled the situation of a person in a coma sensitively. She gave Alice respect, beauty and empathy as I had hoped.
